Day 12 – Grand Canyon

It’s my birthday today!! I am now a big 24 year old 😆🎉🎉
However my birthday day didn’t start off very well…

I had put my name down on the Contiki Activities List to go on a 45 minute Helicopter Tour that morning with everyone else. We were all told to meet on the bus at 7am sharp.
At 7.10am I got a call on the phone in our room from our Tour Manger Blake asking where I was as everyone was waiting on the bus.
I quickly realized I had slept through my alarm!!! I couldn’t believe it.
I jumped out of bed so fast with my heart racing with anxiety. He said I had 3 minutes to get to the bus otherwise they were leaving without me.
So I quickly grabbed some clothes and put them on, grabbed my make up bag and my contact lenses and shoes and ran to the bus.
Everyone saw me run to the bus dropping everything along the way! 😂😂 what a loser.

Everyone clapped when I got on the bus and I’m glad they waited for me otherwise that would have been a very expensive sleep – in. (As you have to pay for the activities you put your name down for even if you don’t turn up)
When I was on the bus I realized that my phone didn’t even charge overnight and it was on 2% battery so my camera wouldn’t work for taking pictures at The Grand Canyon 😥
I had a small digital camera in my bag however so I just used that for the Helicopter tour.
Unfortunately I have no pictures to upload on here though from it.

When we got to the helicopter place, we watched a safety video and all got weighed so they could put us in the appropriate helicopters for our weight.
I ended up getting such a sore stomach while we were waiting that I pretty much curled up on the couch while I waited for my turn in the Helicopter.😯😯
This stomach pain has been an on-going problem with me for anyone who knows me. I used to always get really bad stomach cramps every few months for no reason. One time I ended up in A&E in Australia because I was in so much pain. I didn’t end up seeing a doctor then to find out what was wrong with me because the emergency room was too busy that night but they told me they thought it was something to do with my gallbladder which is really annoying.

Apart from my stomach hurting the whole time and wanting to bend over into a ball, the helicopter tour was great. Riding in a helicopter is so much fun!!
I got to sit at the front next to the pilot and we had amazing views of the whole canyon. My pictures aren’t that great though because my camera kept getting the glare of the helicopter windows in the photos. The Grand Canyon is kind of one of those things to see in real life to appreciate it anyways.

When we got back to our lodge, I went back to bed and curled up in a ball for about 4 hours and went to sleep.

When I woke up, my stomach was heaps better so I had a shower and went down to the local shops with 2 girls on my Contiki. I got a Twix ice cream, pita crisps, spicy avocado hummus and some cans of cider to have to drink later on. (reading that sounds bad after I complained about my stomach all day and then I go and get crappy food)
When we got back to the lodge, we met up with everyone else to take the bus to the edge of the Canyon to watch the sun set.
A few people on Contiki had been drinking all afternoon so half of us were pretty loose and ready to party.
I however stuck with my 2 cans of ciders as not to upset my tummy too much!

imageAs it was my Birthday, everyone sung me Happy Birthday at the Canyon which was nice and I was presented with a slice of carrot cake and some candles that we couldn’t light because it was far too windy.
Blake tried to light a match for me like 3 times so I could blow it out and make a wish but it was far too difficult haha.

imageI tried to take pictures of the Canyon at sunset but it was hard to see the Canyon with the light from the sun shining into the camera.
Note to self: Must take a Photography Course of some type.image

Once the sun had set and we’d all had a group photo and a cup of wine, we lined up for the local bus to take us back to our lodge.
It was so windy and I got pretty cold because I didn’t bring my own jumper 😧
When we got back, we all went to the restaurant  (well it’s more of a big hall where you go and get food from different cafeteria areas and pay for it at the counter) and just sat and talked for a bit.
The hall is where you have the wi-fi but it’s terrible when everyone is on it.
I tried uploading the same blog like 7 times over the last 2 days! And it kept failing 👿

I got to bed just before midnight I think so it was a bit of a late one for me.
Once you find a group you like, it’s hard to get away because you’re all getting to know each other more and more so everyone just talks about their life and starts relating to each other.

So far Contiki has been really fun. Everyone seems to have a good attitude and we all kind of look out for each other or make an effort to chat to one another.
Of course with any type of big group there’s the odd one or two that’s a bit ‘different’ to the rest in terms of not making an effort to get along or causing problems but I think we’ll all having a good time.
Can’t believe it’s only been nearly a week!

Day 11 – Grand Canyon

I’m having such difficulty uploading these blogs because the Wi fi in the Grand Canyon is horrible. When they do eventually upload there’ll be like three blogs put up at one time.

Any who!
On Saturday morning we left Las Vegas at 8am. There was 1 person running for the bus but he made it just in time.
On Contiki they have really strict rules with being on time.
If you’re late to the bus, our driver Ricky will leave without you as it holds everyone else up.
And it’s pretty much up to you to find your way to our next destination.
I have run for the bus once but that’ll be talked about in my next blog…

On our way to the Grand Canyon we stopped off at Walmart haha.
I’ve never been to Walmart before as we don’t have them in New Zealand but you hear so much about this amazing store as it’s in movies and TV shows all the time. It literally has everything you could ever want.
When we arrived, at the front of the store this guy was sitting in a chair giving away free kittens!! I had to pick them up and give them a pet as they were so cuteee. Contiki Cat anyone?

Walmart also had a McDonald’s inside, it was half a grocery store, clothing store, pharmacy and auto parts store all in one. Crazy!
As I was feeling a bit sick/hungover I didn’t get really any snacks from Walmart for the Grand Canyon.
I did get a bag of grapes and had some fries and a sundae from McDonald’s though. Everyone found it so weird how I dipped my fries in my ice cream. Does anyone else do that? I think it tastes great but all the Australians thought it was disgusting!
Good they didn’t see me put my soft serve inside a burger then….I’m weird I know, but it really doesn’t taste as bad as it sounds. Try it some time.imageAfter Walmart, We drove through Route 66 and stopped off at a Gift Shop there. I bought another magnet to add to my Magnet Collection 🙂imageimageimageWe got to the Grand Canyon about 4pm. It’s funny because the bus rides honestly don’t seem that long. Our tour manager talks a bit about stuff so that keeps us pretty occupied, plus we all played a Speed Dating type game to get to know each other.
I also watched a bit if Orange Is The New Black on my tablet and Blake put The Hangover 2 on the Coach TV for us which was very fitting as we just came from Vegas.imageimageIf you haven’t been to the Grand Canyon, there’s really only one word to describe it. Massive!
It’s really cool to look at as you can see all the history on the rocks and formations, and to think it’s been around for so many years!imageimageCan you tell I hadn’t straightened my hair before this picture?imageAfter our quick photo stop, we drove to our lodge where we were all staying and everyone settled into their rooms and either had a nap or went to the restaurant area to get some food.
Around 7pm, everyone had pretty much made their way to the restaurant for food so we all ate and then played some board games afterwards.
There were 3 people’s birthdays so our tour manager bought them each a card and slice of cake which was nice.imageimageThe place we all ate was set up like a food hall. There were lots of table and chairs and a few counters of food you could buy food from. By the end of the night we all had our tables together and were up talking and playing “which would you rather” for awhile. I eventually headed off to bed to watch some Orange Is The new Black before I went to sleep ☺
The rooms looked a bit like cabins (probably because it felt we were in the woods). They were extremely hot but I had a good sleep that night. Maybe too much of a good sleep as you’ll read about in the next post…

Day 10 – Las Vegas

Yesterday my room mate and I woke up to our hotel radio alarm going off at 4am. Brooke had to literally pull it out from the wall because it was hard to figure out how to turn it off in the dark haha.

imageThen at 8.50am. We got a wake up phone call from an automated Elvis Presley impersonator. I hung up on it because I needed my sleep and we didn’t need to wake up that early!
Apparently it was actually meant for this morning but the hotel got it a day early by mistake.

1464894805284I eventually got up and went downstairs for the breakfast buffet. I wish I took a picture of the food because there was so much to choose from! Defiantly one of the best buffet breakfast I’ve had. They had so many different stations of food. They had all different types of meats, Asian dishes, fried chicken, pancakes, waffles, cereals, ingredients to make your own burritos!! Thinking of it now makes me drool.

When I’d finished breakfast, myself and Ashley and Lauren all went to Fashion Show (the mall down the road).. Even though I spent the afternoon the day before shopping, I wanted to buy a new outfit for that night as I didn’t have any dresses with me.
I ended up settling on a white skirt and plain black top (amazing I know) for me to go out in.
I did however buy another pair of shoes and now I can barely fit my stuff into my suitcase!

There was a pool party on at The Palms yesterday too but we didn’t go.
We couldn’t be bothered going all the way in a taxi/walking for something we weren’t sure was going to be amazing. We got buckets instead and grabbed something to eat at the White Chapel (which is apparently famous in the Harold and Kuma? Movie) I actually wasn’t a big fan of the food. It tasted too greasy and fatty for me.

imageAfter we ate, us 3 girls headed back to our rooms to get ready for Cirque Du Soleil.
(Below is the new outfit I bought)image
When we got to the hotel where the show was, we had to wait a little while so I grabbed a slice of very greasy pizza for dinner. (Really there wasn’t much choice for food at the time)

imageIf anyone is in Vegas you MUST see a Cirque Du soleil show.
It was amazing!! We paid $85 on Contiki for it and it was worth it.
I wasn’t sure about going but I’m so glad I did.
It goes for 1 and a half hours which is a really good amount of time. The things they do are just amazing.
And to think they do 2 shows a night!

image

imageWhen the show was over, we had an hour left until we started our limo ride through Vegas and then onto our Rooftop Club for the night.
We all walked through the Vegas Strip for about an hour and I filled up my Alcohol cup along the way.imageimage

imageOn our walk I saw a homeless guy with 3 kittens!! They were just casually in little hats licking themselves without a care in the world. I guess you could easily sleep outside in Vegas as it’s so warm.imageWhen we walked back to Arias (the hotel that does the Cirque Du soleil) we all split up in to groups of 11 and headed off for our limo ride.imageThey provided us with 4 bottles of champagne and i loved it! I think everyone did. We had the music going and I was waving to everyone like a drunk girl on the strip of Vegas – which I was.imageimageimageWhen we got to The Palm we headed upstairs to the rooftop bar.
This time round it was so much more fun!!
I think we all had more alcohol in our systems and it was 2 people on the Contiki’s birthday. (Not mine as mine is tomorrow here)
And we partied it up all night taking shots and dancing together.
We also had amazing views of the whole city up on the Rooftop Bar.imageimageimage

imageimageI don’t think I got home till about 4am. I went home with another girl on the Contiki who was so drunk so I’m glad I got her home safely even if I was in the same boat haha.
When we got to her room at the hotel her card wouldn’t work so I was certain that she’d gotten the wrong room. I had to go down to the desk and then try and get them to come up with a new card or find out which room was actually hers.
In the end it all worked out and it was a great night.imageimageOnce I was back in my room, I had a shower and headed off for a blissfull drunken sleep. 🙂
But not before setting my alarm for 7.30am. Ahh!

I loved Vegas so much. I’d love to come back one day!!!image
