Day 76 & 77 – Dubai to Singapore

The night before I left Dubai, the hotel said they’d extend my check out until 2pm so I could have a sleep in.
They probably knew how much I loved to sleep as whenever house keeping would come I’d always ask them to come back later haha 😴

So I took advantage of this and slept until about 11am. Then it was up to have a shower, wash my hair and pack all my crap into my bag. Luckily enough I’d only really bought clothes in Dubai so I just rolled them up really tight and shoved them into my suitcase/backpack thing.

When it came to 1pm I checked out and left all my bags downstairs in the storage area.
My flight wasn’t until that night so I passed time by going to the mall and spending what little money I had left.
It’s annoying having a night flight when you’re staying at a hotel or hostel. They always get you to check out in the morning which is fine, and you can usually leave your bags with them. I just always feel I can’t do much during the day because I have to be somewhere at a certain time and it all becomes too stressful to do anything.

I ended up going to the airport really early. I think I arrived before 6pm for my 9.30pm flight. 😑 keen!

image

I caught a taxi as I just had too much stuff to carry. The train is much quicker and cheaper though. Even though taxis in Dubai are actually really cheap, think my rode cost me like $25 NZD to the airport from my hotel so it wasn’t bad.

imageimageimage

When I got to the airport, I got a trolley and loaded up all my stuff. I’d checked in online already so just had to drop my bags off and grab my boarding pass.

image

I was hoping there’d be lots of stuff in duty free as it was Dubai airport after all but there wasnt!
This always seems to happen to me, I always try and save my money for duty free and end up getting there and not liking any of the stores.
They had all your usual stuff like the perfume counters, they had a mac counter, all the alcohol and the same chocolates you see everywhere.
I don’t know what I was hoping for really. Maybe another Victoria secrets store or something that sold all the clothes.
I did grab myself a frozen yoghurt to pass the time and sat down to write a blog.

image

It wasn’t until just before my flight I realised that I hadn’t packed any face moisturiser of a face mask for my flight!
Especially as it was a 7 hour over-night flight I knew my skin was going to be drier than the Dubai desert. The ex-beauty therapist in me freaked out and quickly went in search of a hydrating face mask.
I ended up going to Khiels and getting this baby for $44 USD
I was lucky I had USD dollars in my wallet too!

image

Quite a bargain considering how big the tub is.

image

I boarded the flight just after 9pm and was gutted it was an older Emirates airplane. Just because I hadn’t charged my tablet the night before and my phone was running out of battery. Usually the planes have a USB port but this one didn’t 😦 they just had a plug and mine wouldn’t fit! It was like a European point which was weird for a middle eastern airline.
Anyways, the flight attendant got me an adapter to put my chargers in but it kept falling out the whole flight. The guy next to me kept laughing at me when I tried holding it in haha.

image

For 7 hours the flight went really quick. We had dinner and then I went to wash all my make up off and put my new face mask on.
People think it’s weird to do that on a plane but it’s honestly the best thing for your skin. Think how dry and dehydrated your skin gets at 35,000 feet! I feel like my face turns into a prune.
The mask probably wasn’t the best thing for sleeping (Even though it’s an overnight mask) It’s actually quite sticky.

I semi-snoozed through the flight and before I knew it they were waking us up for breakfast. I just had fallen asleep a bit coz I remember feeling grumpy having to wake up haha.

The breakfast was average. Nothing worse than bread that is cold and butter that is even colder coz it’s been fridge. Very hard to spread solid butter onto a cold croissant 😳
First world problems I know!!

image

I got to Singapore in the morning and the airport was pretty quiet so customs etc. was quick.
I got an airport shuttle for $9 to my hostel which was like half an hour away.
the NZ Dollar and Singapore Dollar are pretty much the same so it’s much easier figuring out how much money I’m spending over here.

As I arrived at my hostel before 10am, check in wasn’t until 3pm so I dropped my bags off and asked if I could have a shower.
I was feeling all yuck from my flight so it was good to freshen up.

I then went off for a walk.
It was so humid outside I didn’t actually last terribly long.
I tried to find something to eat but nothing interested me too much.
If you know me, you’ll know I don’t like Asian food apart from Thai and Indianfood hahaha! I know, crazy! Why am I in Singapore then you ask? Where there is an abundance of Asian food? I don’t actually know. Because it was a stop off on my way home really 😄

When I got back to my hostel it was about 2pm but my room was ready so they showed me up to it and I settled in.
I was so extremely tired I had a lie down on my bunk and ended up falling asleep like 3 times.
Eventually I dragged myself out of bed as I didn’t want to sleep in case I didn’t sleep that night.
I think I ended up going down to Bugis Junction (the closest mall to where I am) and had a look around there.
I came across this Korean skin Care brand called Innisfree  and smelt all their products.
I walked away with some samples to try before I bought anything so I was excited to use them that night.

When i got back to the hostel i used one of the volcanic face masks on my skin to try and clear it up a bit.
My skin has broken out majorly ever since I went to Dubai and come to Singapore. I think it’s from all the flying I’ve been doing and sleeping in all the air conditioned rooms. 😣
I hate it!!! Thank god girls can wear make up.

It was safe to say I had a very good sleep that night after barely sleeping for the past 24 hours!

Day 75 – Dubai

Sunday 25th October 2015

I actually did something other than shopping today in Dubai!

Well that’s a lie, I went shopping around lunch time and bought some long skirts but I did go out in the afternoon haha.
I’d organised a Desert Safari Tour through desertsafaridubai.com
It cost me 205 AED which is $83 NZD so it wasn’t too bad in terms of price.

At 3.30pm I was picked up from my hotel by the tour leader in his 4WD.
I sat in the front seat (best views) and then we went to pick up 4 more people from the mall who was also on our tour.
The other people were 4 American guys who worked together on a boat that was currently in Dubai. They had some free time so booked the tour too!

image

We were driven about an hour out from central Dubai when we then stopped at a small convince store so our tour driver could deflate some air in the cars tyres.  They do this so the 4WD’s tyres footprints increase and the 4WD doesn’t sink in as deep into the sand. There’s a lesser chance of getting stuck this way.
The rest of us grabbed a drink and some of the guys got a photo taken with this random bird thing someone was charging people for.

image

We had another 15 minute drive along Al Awir Road where we then pulled off to do some Dune Bashing. My Dad always did 4 wheel driving as I was growing up so it wasn’t super new to me but it was still fun. I’d never driven through desert hills before!

imageimageimage

One of the guys in the car was not loving the bumpiness of the ride and proceeded to throw up half way through. 😵😷
Thankfully he got it in a bag and so we pulled over to let him have some fresh air. It was good timing though anyways as the sun was setting we got some good photos done.
Of course I had my selfie stick anyways and proceeded to take a million selfies in the the hopes that at least one would be good.

imageimageimageimage

Once we’d taken all our snaps, we drove to the campsite where they had camels to ride and smaller quad bikes to ride around the sand.
The campsite was all set up with tables with a stage in the middle and food was being prepared for our dinner.

imageimageimage

While we waited for our dinner, we lined up for the camel rides. To be honest, I wouldn’t have really called it a ride. More of a, hop on the camel, walk 4 meters, get your picture taken and then come back and jump off.
I’d ridden a camel when I was younger in Australia but I forgot how bloody tall they are. As soon as i hopped onto my camel he stood straight up when he wasn’t meant to (he was attached to 2 other camels by a long rope) so I nearly fell off him haha.
Like I’ve previously mentioned before, my phone is terrible at taking picture in the dark so I didn’t really get any. Apart from one below where I’m not even looking haha.

imageimageOnce our short little camel ride was  over, I got changed into something other than my Active Wear for dinner and sat down with a yummy plate of rice, curries and potatoes. It was a buffet style dinner and to be honest I don’t even know what I got given. I just accepted whatever the person at the buffet was offering onto my plate haha. It was quiet dark when we sat down to eat so I couldn’t even really see what I was eating 😦

image

We had a girl do some belly dancing while we ate and another guy do some dancing which was nice to watch.

imageimage

I  was disappointed we didn’t get dessert after our dinner but I guess you can’t please everyone… 😥
I really wanted to get a henna tattoo so thank god I remembered before we left.
I quickly went and got one done before it was time to go and I’m writing this blog 4 days later and it’s still on my hand. Yay.

image

Henna used to be used for cosmetic purposes in Ancient India and to this day Bridal Henna nights remain an important custom through India, the Arabian Peninsula and North Africa.
The henna refers to the dye prepared from the Henna Tree which ‘stains’ the skin and can end up making these really beautiful designs on our skin.

By around 9.30pm it was time to head home. We found our 4WD and drove home with a stop off to inflate the tyres again on the way.
I was feeling hot and sticky and sandy so it was ice cream, shower and bed for me when I got back to my hotel.

image

I’m glad I did the desert safari tour. It wasn’t too expensive, the only thing you had to pay for was alcoholic drinks if you wanted any and the quad bikes.
There are sooo many different companies that do this type of thing so I’d defintaly trip advise.com some if you were interested in doing it in Dubai.

Xx

Day 74 – Dubai

Saturday 24th October

My sightseeing bus pass was still valid for today so I decided to do a different route and see where it took me.

image

First off I went to the Mall next to my hotel to get some breakfast. I don’t think I’ll ever pay for breakfast again if I go travelling haha, I never seem to wake up in time to have it when I’m staying at hotels or hostels.
My alarm goes off at like 9am and I’m so tired I end up just going back to sleep. I think I’m still on European time.

So I missed the hotel breakfast and tried to find something at the mall. By this time it was like 12pm so I guess it was more like lunch. I wasn’t feeling like a big meal and I was on a budget so I got a cinnamon scroll! Hahaha. Probably not the best thing to start off my day.

image

It was pretty yum though. Even if it was a bit too sugary for my liking. I can’t wait when I go home to have healthier food, even some avocado on toast with some pepper would be nice for breakfast haha. 🍞🍅

image

If anyone ever ends up going to Dubai, at The Mall Of The Emirates there’s something called Ski Dubai. Which is basically a large indoor ski field. I never did it because I’ve done something similar before at Snow Planet In Auckland (and I’m not the best skier) but it’s looks like something fun to do in Dubai.

image

When I’d finished my ‘breakfast’ I went and waited for the next Sightseeing Tour Bus and hopped on to the one that would take me to The Mall Of Dubai. I had to switch buses there to get onto the Red route and had to wait about 10 minutes.
While I was waiting though, this little baby kitten jumped out of the bushes and it just made me so sad!
He was not a healthy kitten at all. He was so skinny and had yucky eyes but was so playful. He kept playing with the leaves and when me and this other girl started petting him he kept jumping up on us so we could hold him.

image

Me and this other girl were worried how skinny he was, Ecspecially as he looked so young too!
We asked one of the bus tour people if there was an animal doctor around and they said no and not to worry about it. 😒
When our bus arrived the kitten kept following us and I had to walk away because there was nothing I could do. If I lived in Dubai it’d be such a different story. I’d take him to the vet and everything. The poor baby 😥 I seriously contemplated taking him back home with me but knew he’d be too sick to be allowed back. Awwwwww. When we were about to pull away I saw him run under one of the buses so quickly knocked on the window to get one of the guides attention and motioned to him that the kitten was playing underneath the bus.
When we drove past I saw a couple of the guys on their hands and knees looking under the bus so I really hope they got him. It just wasn’t safe for him to be around all those buses and vans! 😯😯

image

Anyways, onto something a bit happier.
The red route took me past Down Town Boulevard which is where the Burj Khalifia, the Dubai Mall and the Dubai Fountain are all located. Apparently the whole area is 2 square kilometers so it’s pretty big.

image

The Burj Khalifa

image

We also drove past the World Trade Centre which is along Sheik Zayed Road. It’s 39 stories and stands at 149 meters tall. Most of the floors are let out commercially and it used to be the tallest building in Dubai until they built the Burj Khalifia. Companies like Johnson & Johnson, Mastercard and Sony are all in that building, it’s also featured on the 100 Dirham Bank note.

imageimage

I got off at the next stop which was the Dubai Museum.
It was a pretty hot day (as usual In Dubai) and when I entered it seemed like it was all out doors and under sheltered areas. I didn’t think I was going to stick around very long because of the humidity until I saw an entrance that took you downstairs to learn about more of the history of Dubai, and it was air conditioned! 😥😥

image

All the information set out was quite interesting. I read about how Dubai was sustained by fishing and pearl diving for a thousand years until the great depression hit which caused a collapse in the international pearl market.
It wasn’t until 1966 that Dubai discovered oil which has pretty much made  Dubai the modern, business centered city it is today.
Dubai is also considered to be the ‘Hong Kong’ of The Middle East. I read that when the world’s oil supply runs out Dubai would happily survive as it was a major trading center before oil even existed. Lucky them!

imageimage

There was a part of the museum which spoke about food in Dubai from way back in the day until now. The Food in Dubai is very similar to that of India I’ve seen. It has lots of spices and most dishes contain rice, fish and meat because it’s so close to the sea it’s easier to get fresh fish that way. I also learnt that Camels milk is really good for kids as it’s high in calcium and fat. Not sure if I’d ever try that 😐 The meat is usually mutton from either sheep and goats as that’s what Bedouin kept.

image

The Bedouin people are something to know about Dubai. They’re the people who inhabit the desert. It’d be so difficult to live in the desert but they’ve made it a way of life by adapting to everything and doing things a certain way. When you’re in Dubai you can also book an overnight stay at a Bedouin camp to experience a bit of how they live.

Back in the day, the Bedouin men would collect firewood and grass for the animals and then they would then sell this and any money they would get would go towards food that they couldn’t get from their animals. (like bread and rice)
The woman would take care of the house and the children and be in charge of collecting the water. They also drunk the camels milk which I mentioned before and made yoghurt out of it which the kids would help with.
The families would usually stay in one place for 5 months and then move on to somewhere else like near the water so it was easier to collect something to drink in the Summer Time.

image

Only few Bedouins live like they used to in their goat haired tents, raising livestock and hunting. Their numbers are decreasing and nowadays there are approx. only 5% of Bedouins still living as pastoral nomads in all of the Middle East.

You can tell if someone is a Bedouin as they have different facial features by which they can be distinguished from other Egyptians and also they generally dress differently.
The Bedouin men wear long ‘djellabaya’ and a ‘smagg’ (red white draped headcover) or ‘aymemma’ (white headcover) or a white small headdress, sometimes held in place by an ‘agall’ (a black cord).

image

I spent about just over an hour at the museum and then headed on my way to the bus. Luckily when I left I saw my bus company was there so I ran for it and made it on 🙂 no waiting in the sun for me!

The bus took us to some more stops but I didn’t really get off. I was trying to time my day well so I could be back at my hotel by about 5pm. I was wanting to have a shower and then get ready to head out to a bar or something to watch the All Blacks play South Africa in the Rugby World Cup Semi Finals.

We drove past a few Souks and as it was around 3.30pm I got off at a different shopping centre to have a look around and grab some lunch.

image

I walked around Sephora for a little bit and contemplated buying some new mascara but they didn’t have the one I wanted in stock.
I ended up buying another pair of gym pants from some sporting store. The retail assistant was actually so annoying I don’t even know why I bought them off her.
You find over here that in some stores (Victoria Secrets is so painful for this) the sales assistants follow you around like you’re about to run off with half of their merchandise.

As soon as you walk in the store it’s “hello how are you madam? Can I help you look for something?” And I’m always just having a browse so I tell them that but they continue to follow me everywhere that it actually make me uncomfortable. If I so much as touch a pair of pants they’re by my side “what size?? What size you look for madam???? We have your size I get it for you”
I’m usually just feeling the material or something as that’s what girls do. I try not to hover near an item for longer than 4 seconds otherwise it’s off the rack and in the changing room ready for me to try on.

I love Victoria Secrets but every store I’ve been to on this trip, the girls in there are so helpful that it’s starting to do my head in a bit.
Every single one of them greets you and asks if they can help you at some stage. They all want to measure your boobs because even if you know your size “their sizing may be different”
The ask for your name I’m assuming to make it more like they know you and ‘we’re friends’
But the way they write their name on a piece of paper for you and give it to you “incase you need help with anything” shows they must get some type of Commission for the items they sell you and don’t care if the pants your trying on makes you look fat.
Don’t get me wrong, some girls are absolutely fine but I had this one lady today who just threw half the pants I glanced at on the rack into my basket for me to try on. One girl had already helped me and suggested I get a grey pair of pants and I said I didn’t like them and proceeded to look at something else, next thing you know the loud sales assistant is coming over “OMG those are so amazing the ones you’re looking at, I have them at home and they’ve only JUST come out. Have you seen the grey!!??”
Me “oh yes I did, they’re not really my thing though”
VS lady “oh but they’re soooo much nicer on!! Here I’ll put them in your basket for you, oh you MUST get a bra as well. We’re having such a great sale today”

Next thing I know I have 5 bras I didn’t want, 3 tops and 2 pairs of leggings to try on.
Lunch was going to have to wait. 😧
I ended up grabbing some fries from New York Fries later on as the pictures made them look yum, they were pretty average to be honest.

image

I mucked around too long that I got stuck in traffic on the way back to The Dubai Mall.
I then had to either choose to get get a taxi back to my hotel or take the Metro. By this stage is was nearly 6pm and kick off started at 7pm (or 6pm and I’m getting my times confused)

image

To make a long story short, I got back to my hotel just after kick off so I didn’t get a chance to head to a bar or anything to be social with other kiwis. I sat on my bed in my hotel and watched a very intense game while really needing to shower from my sweaty day. Thankfully we won so we’re in the finals for the Rugby world cup 2015 against Australia.

I did finish off my night with this lovely dessert though.
