Day 11 – Grand Canyon

I’m having such difficulty uploading these blogs because the Wi fi in the Grand Canyon is horrible. When they do eventually upload there’ll be like three blogs put up at one time.

Any who!
On Saturday morning we left Las Vegas at 8am. There was 1 person running for the bus but he made it just in time.
On Contiki they have really strict rules with being on time.
If you’re late to the bus, our driver Ricky will leave without you as it holds everyone else up.
And it’s pretty much up to you to find your way to our next destination.
I have run for the bus once but that’ll be talked about in my next blog…

On our way to the Grand Canyon we stopped off at Walmart haha.
I’ve never been to Walmart before as we don’t have them in New Zealand but you hear so much about this amazing store as it’s in movies and TV shows all the time. It literally has everything you could ever want.
When we arrived, at the front of the store this guy was sitting in a chair giving away free kittens!! I had to pick them up and give them a pet as they were so cuteee. Contiki Cat anyone?

Walmart also had a McDonald’s inside, it was half a grocery store, clothing store, pharmacy and auto parts store all in one. Crazy!
As I was feeling a bit sick/hungover I didn’t get really any snacks from Walmart for the Grand Canyon.
I did get a bag of grapes and had some fries and a sundae from McDonald’s though. Everyone found it so weird how I dipped my fries in my ice cream. Does anyone else do that? I think it tastes great but all the Australians thought it was disgusting!
Good they didn’t see me put my soft serve inside a burger then….I’m weird I know, but it really doesn’t taste as bad as it sounds. Try it some time.imageAfter Walmart, We drove through Route 66 and stopped off at a Gift Shop there. I bought another magnet to add to my Magnet Collection 🙂imageimageimageWe got to the Grand Canyon about 4pm. It’s funny because the bus rides honestly don’t seem that long. Our tour manager talks a bit about stuff so that keeps us pretty occupied, plus we all played a Speed Dating type game to get to know each other.
I also watched a bit if Orange Is The New Black on my tablet and Blake put The Hangover 2 on the Coach TV for us which was very fitting as we just came from Vegas.imageimageIf you haven’t been to the Grand Canyon, there’s really only one word to describe it. Massive!
It’s really cool to look at as you can see all the history on the rocks and formations, and to think it’s been around for so many years!imageimageCan you tell I hadn’t straightened my hair before this picture?imageAfter our quick photo stop, we drove to our lodge where we were all staying and everyone settled into their rooms and either had a nap or went to the restaurant area to get some food.
Around 7pm, everyone had pretty much made their way to the restaurant for food so we all ate and then played some board games afterwards.
There were 3 people’s birthdays so our tour manager bought them each a card and slice of cake which was nice.imageimageThe place we all ate was set up like a food hall. There were lots of table and chairs and a few counters of food you could buy food from. By the end of the night we all had our tables together and were up talking and playing “which would you rather” for awhile. I eventually headed off to bed to watch some Orange Is The new Black before I went to sleep ☺
The rooms looked a bit like cabins (probably because it felt we were in the woods). They were extremely hot but I had a good sleep that night. Maybe too much of a good sleep as you’ll read about in the next post…

Day 10 – Las Vegas

Yesterday my room mate and I woke up to our hotel radio alarm going off at 4am. Brooke had to literally pull it out from the wall because it was hard to figure out how to turn it off in the dark haha.

imageThen at 8.50am. We got a wake up phone call from an automated Elvis Presley impersonator. I hung up on it because I needed my sleep and we didn’t need to wake up that early!
Apparently it was actually meant for this morning but the hotel got it a day early by mistake.

1464894805284I eventually got up and went downstairs for the breakfast buffet. I wish I took a picture of the food because there was so much to choose from! Defiantly one of the best buffet breakfast I’ve had. They had so many different stations of food. They had all different types of meats, Asian dishes, fried chicken, pancakes, waffles, cereals, ingredients to make your own burritos!! Thinking of it now makes me drool.

When I’d finished breakfast, myself and Ashley and Lauren all went to Fashion Show (the mall down the road).. Even though I spent the afternoon the day before shopping, I wanted to buy a new outfit for that night as I didn’t have any dresses with me.
I ended up settling on a white skirt and plain black top (amazing I know) for me to go out in.
I did however buy another pair of shoes and now I can barely fit my stuff into my suitcase!

There was a pool party on at The Palms yesterday too but we didn’t go.
We couldn’t be bothered going all the way in a taxi/walking for something we weren’t sure was going to be amazing. We got buckets instead and grabbed something to eat at the White Chapel (which is apparently famous in the Harold and Kuma? Movie) I actually wasn’t a big fan of the food. It tasted too greasy and fatty for me.

imageAfter we ate, us 3 girls headed back to our rooms to get ready for Cirque Du Soleil.
(Below is the new outfit I bought)image
When we got to the hotel where the show was, we had to wait a little while so I grabbed a slice of very greasy pizza for dinner. (Really there wasn’t much choice for food at the time)

imageIf anyone is in Vegas you MUST see a Cirque Du soleil show.
It was amazing!! We paid $85 on Contiki for it and it was worth it.
I wasn’t sure about going but I’m so glad I did.
It goes for 1 and a half hours which is a really good amount of time. The things they do are just amazing.
And to think they do 2 shows a night!

imageWhen the show was over, we had an hour left until we started our limo ride through Vegas and then onto our Rooftop Club for the night.
We all walked through the Vegas Strip for about an hour and I filled up my Alcohol cup along the way.imageimage

imageOn our walk I saw a homeless guy with 3 kittens!! They were just casually in little hats licking themselves without a care in the world. I guess you could easily sleep outside in Vegas as it’s so warm.imageWhen we walked back to Arias (the hotel that does the Cirque Du soleil) we all split up in to groups of 11 and headed off for our limo ride.imageThey provided us with 4 bottles of champagne and i loved it! I think everyone did. We had the music going and I was waving to everyone like a drunk girl on the strip of Vegas – which I was.imageimageimageWhen we got to The Palm we headed upstairs to the rooftop bar.
This time round it was so much more fun!!
I think we all had more alcohol in our systems and it was 2 people on the Contiki’s birthday. (Not mine as mine is tomorrow here)
And we partied it up all night taking shots and dancing together.
We also had amazing views of the whole city up on the Rooftop Bar.imageimageimage

imageimageI don’t think I got home till about 4am. I went home with another girl on the Contiki who was so drunk so I’m glad I got her home safely even if I was in the same boat haha.
When we got to her room at the hotel her card wouldn’t work so I was certain that she’d gotten the wrong room. I had to go down to the desk and then try and get them to come up with a new card or find out which room was actually hers.
In the end it all worked out and it was a great night.imageimageOnce I was back in my room, I had a shower and headed off for a blissfull drunken sleep. 🙂
But not before setting my alarm for 7.30am. Ahh!

I loved Vegas so much. I’d love to come back one day!!!image

Day 9 – Las Vegas

So i’m going to be writing 3 separate blog posts today as I haven’t updated in the last 3 days (including today)
I guess that’s what happens in Vegas! I go out and party and meet people and then have no time to update!

Thursday 20th August 2015

I was up nice and early Thursday morning!
All the Contiki tour people had to be at the bus by 7.15am in LA.
Once all our bags had been put on the bus we were off to Las Vegas.

There’s not much to say about the bus ride to Vegas. It was mainly filled with our tour guide Blake telling us what is and isn’t okay on the Contiki bus. No eating dairy, no smoking, take care of your own stuff, try and join in as many activities as you can etc..

We had a stop off in some town on the way to Vegas and I had Subway to eat.

We each also had to talk to the person next to us and then go up to the front of the bus in pairs to use the microphone and introduce ourselves to everyone as well as telling everyone a few things about ourselves.
As there was like 50-55 of us it kind of took awhile but it was nice hearing about where everyone was from and why they came on Contiki.
Hint: Everyone is pretty much from Australia or New Zealand. Plus a couple of German’s thrown in there for fun.

We got to Vegas just after midday so it was a few hours on the bus but it went by really fast as everyone talked or listened to music.imageVegas is more than I imagined it would be!
Everything is defiantly bigger and better in Vegas. The hotels are absolutely HUGE.
I couldn’t stop looking at all all the big hotels and casinos they have here. My pictures don’t do Vegas justice. You really have to see it to believe it.

imageimageimageHarrahs2We stayed at Harrah’s Hotel on the Vegas strip which is basically a massive hotel with casino’s and bars downstairs. Chandeliers resembling large gold Mardi Gras beads were decorated in the casino’s and HD Tv’s were all on the walls showing lots of sports and racing. I assume most hotels in Vegas are like this, it’s so exciting!

Once we got to the hotel for our first night, we all checked in and headed with our room mates to our room.imageAs we got out of the bus it was crazy hot! I know it’s the desert but I wasn’t prepared for it to be THIS hot.
You know when you walk past a bus or something and it’s blowing hot air? That’s what it feels like but all the time.

imageAs I still had heels I needed to buy, I went with 2 girls from my Contiki to the nearest mall once we’d settled in.
Me and another girl Amy got ourselves a bucket of this fruity alcoholic slushy from one of the many liquor stands on the side of the road. imageIt’s great that you can drink anywhere in Vegas!
When we went shopping I was casually sipping on my icy cold vodka and such 😛 wherever I went.imageI did end up buying some shoes while we were at the mall. It was buy 1 pair get another one for $5 so I ended up buying some white wedge type heels and some sandals to wear.
When we were leaving we bumped into a couple of more girls from Contiki so went and got another bucket with them 🙂

imageBy the time I got back to our hotel, I had an hour and a half to get ready for our bus tour around Las Vegas.
I made it to the bus just in time coz I had to wash my hair and the whole drying and styling process took forever haha!
The tour was good, we got to stop at the Las Vegas sign that you always see in pictures and movies.

imageWaiting in line to get a photo was extremely hot as there were so many people waiting to do the same thing.
After we’d gotten our pictures taken, we headed off to Planet Hollywood for dinner. I just got a broccoli pasta thing which was all good. It was one of our ‘included meals’ on the Contiki so it was already paid for.

When we were all back on the bus, we’d sobered up a bit from dinner but our tour manager Blake started saying that he felt really sick.
I assumed it was something from dinner coz he actually didn’t look that good.
We had to stop the bus and everything so he could go outside for fresh air.
He made us all get off the bus as well and go for a walk down the road where all the wedding chapels were.
He said he was going to go find a pharmacy so we all kind of walked down the road and then ended up waiting for a good 15 minutes outside some random pawn shop. Everyone was getting really frustrated, Especially the girls as we were all mostly wearing heels and the heat was making us really hot and our feet all sweaty and slippery.

imageAfter awhile I was like, screw this and started walking back to the bus with a few other people. We came across Blake on the way and he said that we were welcome to hang out in the wedding chapel as it was air conditioned.
I knew something was up when he said that!
We all got a surprise when we went into the chapel and Elvis started singing for us and said 2 people were getting married tonight.imageimageAnd guess who got married.
ME. haha, not out of choice – but me and another guy Rhys (my now husband) were chosen to get married.
It was a beautiful ceremony as well as it all being pretty funny.
It’s obviously not legit but we got a certificate and everything.
I’ve left it in the Contiki Coach though so I can’t take a picture of it right now.

After the wedding we headed to a nightclub that Blake had organised for us to get front of line.
All the girls got a free drink thank god because the prices of the drinks were outrageous!
I didn’t buy one but I overheard someone saying that they were like $40
Amy got a bottle of water (a small Fiji brand one) and it was $11

They free pour here in America – which means they can put as much alcohol as they want in a drink – which is great but still, that’s so expensive.
I guess it is Vegas though and we were at a club that Tiesto was playing at.
I was just confused as to why we were put at that club when everyone on Contiki are young poor people haha! (Well not poor exactly, just being careful with our money)

Anyways, me and a few girls went downstairs (same club) where they were playing better music. I danced away there and ended up in some VIP booth as well which was all good so got a few free drinks out of that 😌

imageI ended up loosing everyone by the end of the night so walked in bare feet at like 3am all the way through the casino to the taxi rink. Yuck! At least it was carpet.
My shoes were just killing my feet!

When I got to the taxi rink I found Jonathan and Scott from my Contiki and we caught a cab back to our hotel together.
They wanted McDonald’s so I walked (still in bare feet) with them to McDonald’s but then I left when I kept getting weird looks for not wearing any shoes, awkward… I guess looking back it was pretty disgusting. My feet were just sticking to the floor the whole time.

Overall the first night wasn’t amazing but it was really great to see everything for the first time! I’d love to go back if I had more money.
