Green Tortoise Hostel – San Francisco

Stayed: August 2015 (Summer) 4 Nights
Room:
5 Person Female Dorm
Overall Rating:
8/10 [Was clean, had lots to do, great location, friendly and social travelers]

mainbg1I stayed at Green Tortoise Hostel for my 5 wonderful days in San Francisco.
This was my very first time staying at a hostel so I wasn’t sure what to expect but it was pretty good 🙂
If you have a look on their website they sometimes have good rates for rooms depending on the time of year. I paid USD$204 for my 4 nights (including taxes)

Check in is at 2pm which was fine for me as I didn’t arrive until about 7pm. I’d just had a long 16 hour flight from New Zealand with a short stop in LA so I was knackered!
I paid for my room once I got to the hostel but you can cancel your reservation free of charge up to 48 hours in advance if you change your mind.

There are private rooms available

The reception is open 24 hours a day which is really helpful for people arriving at different hours and it’s easy to find!
I took a shuttle from the airport for about $19-$20 otherwise you can take the BART for $9 and get off at Montgomery Street Station and walk for about 15 minutes.
If you have a car, note that they don’t provide parking and recommend you pay to park it in a garage. If you e-mail them, they’ll tell you where to go as sometimes they do deals with garages for like half the price.

I stayed in this identical dorm 🙂

This is a Party Hostel so don’t book here if all you want to do is sleep and keep to yourself! Most of the people who stay here are between 20 and 30 years of age. They have nightly events so it’s good to check at reception to see what’s happening that night.

Unfortunately I didn’t attend any of the activities they hosted (Bar crawls etc.). Looking back I really should have but I was new at this whole travelling solo thing. Also, I’d met some people when I was out on one of my day trips so I went out for dinner with them throughout the week instead.

Note: The only problem I had with this hostel was one of the staff member’s. When I arrived, obviously hot and tired and sore from carrying my stuff and my 16 hour flight he proceeded to tell me every single rule and info about the hostel while I just stood there and listened for 10 minutes. I asked if I could just go to my room and come back down later but he got snippy and explained how every single little thing worked from the washing machine to what cereals they provided.
I know I sound bitchy writing this, but if you were in the mood that I was in, I just really could not be bothered.
A couple of nights later when I was in bed, the same guy just barged into my room and switched the lights on. First of all, he didn’t knock which I thought was rude as it was a female only dorm room and I could have been getting changed. Second I was wearing a nightgown I had to quickly adjust and thirdly he didn’t even explain why he was in there! Just went to one of the beds and lifted the mattress looking for something. He left a few minutes later (Without turning off the light I might add) and 2 other girls came back with him a little while later who then explained to me that one of them found ants in her bed so he was checking to see what could be done I guess.
I don’t think anything was ever solved as her bed was right next to the window (And the window was open all the time) so I’m pretty sure that’s how she had them. I dunno, that just made me so annoyed how disrespectful he was!

Day 21 – New Orleans

This morning, My alarm went off at 7.30am which I set so I could make it to the 8.30am bus departure for the Alligator Swamp Tour I’d signed up for.
You’re probably wondering if I made it considering the ending of my last blog.

The conversation with my room-mate Brooke went something like this
Brooke – “Sarah are you going to get up?? You have 10 minutes to be at the bus”
Me – “Ahh, I think I’ll miss it. Isn’t it only like $10 I’m paying anyways?”
B – “uhh no its $60”
Me – “F*** sakes!” *forces myself out of bed and puts some clothes on*

I made it to the shuttle bus just in time looking a little worse-for-wear.
Below is a quick snap I took in the morning of my corner of the bus 😩imageEveryone was feeling pretty similar to how I felt!
When we got to the swamp, we had to wait around for a bit and then got put into groups of around 15 for the boats.imageimageOnce we were out on the water I felt a little better thanks to the boat breeze. I would have sweated myself away in the New Orleans heat otherwise!imageI thought Alligators would be quite scary but they’re not at all. They’re really chilled and kinda just swim around in the swamp minding their own business. We had a really good tour guide who kept trying to grab one out of the water to show us and he told us lots of facts about them. He was saying how the alligator guides cut their tail fins a certain way when they’re born so they can find out how old they are later in life.
We actually ended up getting to hold a baby Alligator too which was cool.

imageimage(My hair is looking beautiful here I know 💁)

When the tour was over we all went back to the hotel. I had a shower and washed my hair and ended up going out again down to the mall to try and find some more clothes to wear.
I ended up only buying a light play-suit to wear but currently I’ve worn it for the past 2 days straight!
I’m in desperate need of doing some washing.

At 6pm we all headed to Mardi Gras world. That’s where they make all the floats for Mardi Gras.
We took a tour to see what it takes to bring Mardi Gras to life year after year. We also learnt about the history of Mardi Gras and our tour guide showed us how they make all the floats.
It was an okay tour, they gave us free drinks at the beginning so I think people were more distracted by that.
We then got to make masks for the next hour.imageimageI didn’t take a picture of my mask but I’ll try to next time I see it.
I gave it to our coach driver Ricky to put on his bus haha.
I made it so it looked like the American Flag.directory-banner-mardi-gras-masks-slide-2

That night I wasn’t planning on going out…but you know what happens on Contiki.imageQuite a few of the people who I feel I’ve grown the closest to left Contiki that night. They were finishing the tour in New Orleans while the rest of us continued on to New York City 😥
There were many tears as people said goodbye! And quite a few pictures taken. (very blurry pictures may I add, I’m only 24 and can afford a Samsung Note 3)imageimageimageimageThe flash wasn’t very good so I guess you could say these pictures won’t be going up on my wall any time soon.

The bar we were at closed after 12am so when the clock struck midnight we all went our own ways and went home.
There was 11 new girls who joined our Contiki group too so let’s see if they like us rowdy bunch! 😜

Xx

Day 15 – Amarillo feat. Santa Fe (New Mexico)

This morning I got a bit of a sleep in. We had the optional activity of doing a hot air balloon ride in Albuquerque but I was too scared/too poor to do it haha.
Those people who were doing it had to be at the bus by 6.20am so I’m glad it wasn’t me! 😴😴Swimming_Pool-_EveningWhen I eventually got up (9.45am departure) I washed my hair and tried to vigorously scrub the fake tan off my legs.
I love staying at these hotels though. It’s nice to use the towels they provide instead of your own. There’s nothing worse than a damp smelly towel in your bag for half the trip!
We stayed at the Best Western in Albuquerque (picture above) and it was pretty good.
All the places we’ve stayed on Contiki so far have been much better than I imagined. I thought we’d be staying in little 2* motels or something but I’ve been pleasantly surprised.

imageOnce on the bus, I had some skittles for breakfast and played some music on my iPod on the way to the capital of New Mexico, Santa Fe.
We did stop off at this cow boy type shop to buy some shirts and boots for the rodeo we have coming up in Texas.

imageThe shoes were soo expensive though. Like $100-$700 so I didn’t buy any (i also have absolutely no room in my bag for any more shoes)
I did however buy a brown checkered shirt for the rodeo which I now think may be a bit too small for me.imageimageAround lunch time we stopped off in Santa Fe which is another ‘cute’ town I can add to my list. It’s the fourth largest city in the state but it felt like the nicest small town.

imageWhen we were wondering around, we all got fajitas from this fajita stall. I wasn’t sure about the chicken in mine so i picked a lot of it out and gave it to the birds. I’m very funny when it comes to meat…It has to be thoroughly cooked or I won’t eat it. That’s why I never eat steak, and whenever I have chicken I have to see if it’s white all the way through. You’d think I had a bad case of food-poisoning in the past or something but I’m actually just weird. :/

imageAfter feeding myself and the birds, I went across the road and looked in a few shops (bought myself a magnet) and then went to Haagen Dazs and got myself a small caramel type sundae which made me very full and sleepy on the bus.
I’m like a baby when it comes to food! Eat then sleep, eat then sleep… zzz

imageimageOnce on the bus, it was onwards to Amarillo, Texas!
We had a stop off at a gas station on the way for gas and snacks. These little stop offs are going to make me fat (not to mention my poor food choices, refer back to me eating SKittle for Breakfast and Ice-cream for lunch. Ahh…)
The gas stations just sell candy and chocolate and hot dogs and all things bad for you.
This time I defiantly didn’t buy anything.imageWe played a few games on the bus (in between me watching Orange Is the New Black on my tablet) One game we had to transfer a ball between 2 teams but you couldn’t use your hands.
The other one we had to unwrap a star burst wearing gloves.image

imageHalf way through the drive we had a surprise stop off at the Cadillac Ranch to spray paint some Cadillac’s.
The Cadillac ranch isn’t actually a ranch, it’s a public art installation and sculpture created in 1974 by architects Chip Lord, Hudson Marquez and Doug Michels. They were part of this art group called Ant Farm who put these Cadillac’s in the ground as a display for everyone. Suddenly people started spray painting the Cadillac’s so the guys made it so anyone can just come and spray paint them.
The cars are visible from the highway, and you can get to them though private land by driving along a frontage road and entering the pasture by walking through an unlocked gate.

imageOur tour guide provided us with spray cans so everyone went crazy spraying the Cadillac’s and writing our names on them. big-texan-motelWhen we finally got to our Motel, The Big Texan (which was so cool by the way) we had about half an hour to get ready for dinner at the Big Steak Ranch.imageimageAt the restaurant they do a Steak Challenge so a couple of people signed up for that from Contiki. You have to eat a 2kg (72oz) piece of steak as well as a side of shrimp, a bread roll, some salad and a baked potato.SONY DSC

imageUnfortunately the boys didn’t finish it in time so had to pay the $70 (well all of us on Contiki helped them pay as it was for our entertainment also)
There was another guy who did it afterwards from the public and finished everything BUT half of the potato. He just couldn’t do it and had to go and throw up. 😷imageimageimageAfter we’d finished our meals, it was off to the dance floor to break out some line dancing, play some beer pong and drink a few drinks.
Safe to say I got a bit drunk last night and ended up falling asleep on top of the drier in the laundry room.
Anything is comfortable to sleep on when you drink I swear.
I did make it to my bed around 5am and then got up before 8.30am to catch the bus to Dallas.
*sigh* all in the day of being on Contiki.
