Day 13 – Durango feat. Monument Valley

Today we left the Grand Canyon nice and early just before 8am to head to Durango.
(Check out the map below for where I’m at)

grand-southern-start-new-york-city-map-785x550imageimageIt was a pretty long day of driving and stopping as we stopped off in Monument Valley and took lots of pictures.
If no one knows where Monument Valley is, it’s located on the Arizona-Utah state line and it means ‘valley of the rocks’
That’s basically what it is as well.
Clusters of large sandstone hills with flat tops that you’ve probably seen pictures of before.
As it’s in the desert, Monument Valley gets pretty cold winters and hot summers. When we were there it was very hot!imageimageimageWe stopped off on a road which is meant to be one of the most impressive roads on the Northern Route through Utah to Monument Valley. It was used as the location in the movie ‘Forrest Gump’ where Forrest ended his cross country run.
We all got photos on the road with the monuments in the background. It was hard though as it was a main road and there were lots of cars driving through. I’m sure they were annoyed that a whole bunch of Contiki people were standing in the middle trying to get an ‘American Photo’ with the flag!

On our stop, we also visited the ‘Forrest Gump Point’ where Forrest stopped running in the movie.

Once we’d all taken plenty of photos, we hopped back on the bus to continue our journey to Durango, Colorado.
Just before 4pm we arrived and looked out the windows at this cozy little town. I’d never put much research into Durango before I arrived but I’d describe it as one of those cute towns you see in the movies where everyone may know each other.
In 2010, according to Google. There were around 16,887 people living here.
It’s nestled in the Animas River Valley which makes the town popular for whitewater rafting, kayaking and canoeing. It’s the place you want to go to if you love hiking, mountain biking, rock climbing, hunting, off-roading and fishing.
As you drive down the Main Avenue, you’re greeted with clothing boutiques, gift shops, bars, lounges and restaurants. Like I said – cute.

When we got to the ‘Travel Lodge’ where we were staying, Ashley and I went down to the liquor store and bought some alcohol before we all went out for dinner. Our Tour Leader told us before we arrived that everyone in Durango knows when a Contiki Group is here. Maybe we just stand out or something…
When Ashley and I went down the road, we had a few people yell out of their cars “Hey Contiki Girls!!” so I guess he was right.

When everyone had gotten dressed and the girls had made themselves a bit more glam, our bus driver Ricky drove us all down to a restaurant for dinner, I ordered some beef and bean mix with salsa type stuff on a flat bread which was good but not amazing.
After our dinner and a couple of drinks, we all headed down the road to this small club called ‘Moes’ which is the regular Contiki Bar.

The rest of the night was filled with far too many drinks and shots. I even did the ole’ Belly shot and felt like I was on Spring Break. Haha!
My phone however died so I have no pictures from last night!
Maybe next time 🙂

Day 10 – Las Vegas

Yesterday my room mate and I woke up to our hotel radio alarm going off at 4am. Brooke had to literally pull it out from the wall because it was hard to figure out how to turn it off in the dark haha.

imageThen at 8.50am. We got a wake up phone call from an automated Elvis Presley impersonator. I hung up on it because I needed my sleep and we didn’t need to wake up that early!
Apparently it was actually meant for this morning but the hotel got it a day early by mistake.

1464894805284I eventually got up and went downstairs for the breakfast buffet. I wish I took a picture of the food because there was so much to choose from! Defiantly one of the best buffet breakfast I’ve had. They had so many different stations of food. They had all different types of meats, Asian dishes, fried chicken, pancakes, waffles, cereals, ingredients to make your own burritos!! Thinking of it now makes me drool.

When I’d finished breakfast, myself and Ashley and Lauren all went to Fashion Show (the mall down the road).. Even though I spent the afternoon the day before shopping, I wanted to buy a new outfit for that night as I didn’t have any dresses with me.
I ended up settling on a white skirt and plain black top (amazing I know) for me to go out in.
I did however buy another pair of shoes and now I can barely fit my stuff into my suitcase!

There was a pool party on at The Palms yesterday too but we didn’t go.
We couldn’t be bothered going all the way in a taxi/walking for something we weren’t sure was going to be amazing. We got buckets instead and grabbed something to eat at the White Chapel (which is apparently famous in the Harold and Kuma? Movie) I actually wasn’t a big fan of the food. It tasted too greasy and fatty for me.

imageAfter we ate, us 3 girls headed back to our rooms to get ready for Cirque Du Soleil.
(Below is the new outfit I bought)image
When we got to the hotel where the show was, we had to wait a little while so I grabbed a slice of very greasy pizza for dinner. (Really there wasn’t much choice for food at the time)

imageIf anyone is in Vegas you MUST see a Cirque Du soleil show.
It was amazing!! We paid $85 on Contiki for it and it was worth it.
I wasn’t sure about going but I’m so glad I did.
It goes for 1 and a half hours which is a really good amount of time. The things they do are just amazing.
And to think they do 2 shows a night!

imageWhen the show was over, we had an hour left until we started our limo ride through Vegas and then onto our Rooftop Club for the night.
We all walked through the Vegas Strip for about an hour and I filled up my Alcohol cup along the way.imageimage

imageOn our walk I saw a homeless guy with 3 kittens!! They were just casually in little hats licking themselves without a care in the world. I guess you could easily sleep outside in Vegas as it’s so warm.imageWhen we walked back to Arias (the hotel that does the Cirque Du soleil) we all split up in to groups of 11 and headed off for our limo ride.imageThey provided us with 4 bottles of champagne and i loved it! I think everyone did. We had the music going and I was waving to everyone like a drunk girl on the strip of Vegas – which I was.imageimageimageWhen we got to The Palm we headed upstairs to the rooftop bar.
This time round it was so much more fun!!
I think we all had more alcohol in our systems and it was 2 people on the Contiki’s birthday. (Not mine as mine is tomorrow here)
And we partied it up all night taking shots and dancing together.
We also had amazing views of the whole city up on the Rooftop Bar.imageimageimage

imageimageI don’t think I got home till about 4am. I went home with another girl on the Contiki who was so drunk so I’m glad I got her home safely even if I was in the same boat haha.
When we got to her room at the hotel her card wouldn’t work so I was certain that she’d gotten the wrong room. I had to go down to the desk and then try and get them to come up with a new card or find out which room was actually hers.
In the end it all worked out and it was a great night.imageimageOnce I was back in my room, I had a shower and headed off for a blissfull drunken sleep. 🙂
But not before setting my alarm for 7.30am. Ahh!

I loved Vegas so much. I’d love to come back one day!!!image

Packing List

I’m currently lying on my bed listening to Sam Hunt sing from my speakers, all while wearing this silly little travel cushion around my neck haha.

image

I finally have some free time to write a quick blog about getting ready for my travels overseas!!
Last Friday was my last day at work for the next few months. The other administrative girls bought me a cake for my ‘Last day’ which was really nice of them 🙂

image

As I leave tomorrow to head up to Auckland, I’ve spent the day packing all my stuff together and hoping that my backpack ends up at a respectable weight…
The final weight was just under 14kgs so I think I did alright. Ecspecially as I’m taking shampoo, conditioner, a big bottle of fake tan and lots of contact lenses!!
These past 2 weeks I’ve been have eye after eye problems so I was slightly freaking out that the first part of my trip I’d have irritated eyes but it’s all cleared up now 😥
I had been using this eyelash serum called F Lash for a few weeks (this was to make my eyelashes supposedly grow and not get eyelash extensions) and I ended up getting a swollen cornea from it 😣 was so annoying! And then two styes on top of that!
I know some people who use the serum though and they’re fine, I think my eyes are just really sensitive to stuff.

So yes, I haven’t quite gotten to my maximum weight of 23kgs I’m allowed on the plane. Im a bit disappointed however I couldn’t stay under 12kgs. That was my goal weight!

I figure most of the stuff I’ve packed I’ll use up on my trip so it can only get lighter ☺
It’s not too bad to carry on my back, but I do want to buy stuff along the way.
I’m thinking I’ll collect magnets as my souvenirs from everywhere I go. It was either that or pens haha.
This is what I’ve packed so far. (And please note that I’m a real girly girl so some of this stuff most people wouldn’t bring)

Let me know if you think I’ve forgotten anything. I feel like all the stuff I’ve packed I’ll actually need. I know I could just pack my phone and not bring my tablet or anything but I’m going to use it on the plane and watch all my ‘Orange is the new black’ on it. Plus I feel it’s pretty good for writing my blogs and watching stuff on the long bus trips.

It’s weird, I feel I’d be more excited for this trip because everyone else is. I just don’t think it’s really hit me yet that I’m going. I think once I’m on the plane I’ll be like “holy shit I’m going overseas by myself”
Eek!

Happy travelling everyone xx
