Day 9 – Las Vegas

So i’m going to be writing 3 separate blog posts today as I haven’t updated in the last 3 days (including today)
I guess that’s what happens in Vegas! I go out and party and meet people and then have no time to update!

Thursday 20th August 2015

I was up nice and early Thursday morning!
All the Contiki tour people had to be at the bus by 7.15am in LA.
Once all our bags had been put on the bus we were off to Las Vegas.

There’s not much to say about the bus ride to Vegas. It was mainly filled with our tour guide Blake telling us what is and isn’t okay on the Contiki bus. No eating dairy, no smoking, take care of your own stuff, try and join in as many activities as you can etc..

We had a stop off in some town on the way to Vegas and I had Subway to eat.

We each also had to talk to the person next to us and then go up to the front of the bus in pairs to use the microphone and introduce ourselves to everyone as well as telling everyone a few things about ourselves.
As there was like 50-55 of us it kind of took awhile but it was nice hearing about where everyone was from and why they came on Contiki.
Hint: Everyone is pretty much from Australia or New Zealand. Plus a couple of German’s thrown in there for fun.

We got to Vegas just after midday so it was a few hours on the bus but it went by really fast as everyone talked or listened to music.imageVegas is more than I imagined it would be!
Everything is defiantly bigger and better in Vegas. The hotels are absolutely HUGE.
I couldn’t stop looking at all all the big hotels and casinos they have here. My pictures don’t do Vegas justice. You really have to see it to believe it.

imageimageimageHarrahs2We stayed at Harrah’s Hotel on the Vegas strip which is basically a massive hotel with casino’s and bars downstairs. Chandeliers resembling large gold Mardi Gras beads were decorated in the casino’s and HD Tv’s were all on the walls showing lots of sports and racing. I assume most hotels in Vegas are like this, it’s so exciting!

Once we got to the hotel for our first night, we all checked in and headed with our room mates to our room.imageAs we got out of the bus it was crazy hot! I know it’s the desert but I wasn’t prepared for it to be THIS hot.
You know when you walk past a bus or something and it’s blowing hot air? That’s what it feels like but all the time.

imageAs I still had heels I needed to buy, I went with 2 girls from my Contiki to the nearest mall once we’d settled in.
Me and another girl Amy got ourselves a bucket of this fruity alcoholic slushy from one of the many liquor stands on the side of the road. imageIt’s great that you can drink anywhere in Vegas!
When we went shopping I was casually sipping on my icy cold vodka and such 😛 wherever I went.imageI did end up buying some shoes while we were at the mall. It was buy 1 pair get another one for $5 so I ended up buying some white wedge type heels and some sandals to wear.
When we were leaving we bumped into a couple of more girls from Contiki so went and got another bucket with them 🙂

imageBy the time I got back to our hotel, I had an hour and a half to get ready for our bus tour around Las Vegas.
I made it to the bus just in time coz I had to wash my hair and the whole drying and styling process took forever haha!
The tour was good, we got to stop at the Las Vegas sign that you always see in pictures and movies.

imageWaiting in line to get a photo was extremely hot as there were so many people waiting to do the same thing.
After we’d gotten our pictures taken, we headed off to Planet Hollywood for dinner. I just got a broccoli pasta thing which was all good. It was one of our ‘included meals’ on the Contiki so it was already paid for.

When we were all back on the bus, we’d sobered up a bit from dinner but our tour manager Blake started saying that he felt really sick.
I assumed it was something from dinner coz he actually didn’t look that good.
We had to stop the bus and everything so he could go outside for fresh air.
He made us all get off the bus as well and go for a walk down the road where all the wedding chapels were.
He said he was going to go find a pharmacy so we all kind of walked down the road and then ended up waiting for a good 15 minutes outside some random pawn shop. Everyone was getting really frustrated, Especially the girls as we were all mostly wearing heels and the heat was making us really hot and our feet all sweaty and slippery.

imageAfter awhile I was like, screw this and started walking back to the bus with a few other people. We came across Blake on the way and he said that we were welcome to hang out in the wedding chapel as it was air conditioned.
I knew something was up when he said that!
We all got a surprise when we went into the chapel and Elvis started singing for us and said 2 people were getting married tonight.imageimageAnd guess who got married.
ME. haha, not out of choice – but me and another guy Rhys (my now husband) were chosen to get married.
It was a beautiful ceremony as well as it all being pretty funny.
It’s obviously not legit but we got a certificate and everything.
I’ve left it in the Contiki Coach though so I can’t take a picture of it right now.

After the wedding we headed to a nightclub that Blake had organised for us to get front of line.
All the girls got a free drink thank god because the prices of the drinks were outrageous!
I didn’t buy one but I overheard someone saying that they were like $40
Amy got a bottle of water (a small Fiji brand one) and it was $11

They free pour here in America – which means they can put as much alcohol as they want in a drink – which is great but still, that’s so expensive.
I guess it is Vegas though and we were at a club that Tiesto was playing at.
I was just confused as to why we were put at that club when everyone on Contiki are young poor people haha! (Well not poor exactly, just being careful with our money)

Anyways, me and a few girls went downstairs (same club) where they were playing better music. I danced away there and ended up in some VIP booth as well which was all good so got a few free drinks out of that 😌

imageI ended up loosing everyone by the end of the night so walked in bare feet at like 3am all the way through the casino to the taxi rink. Yuck! At least it was carpet.
My shoes were just killing my feet!

When I got to the taxi rink I found Jonathan and Scott from my Contiki and we caught a cab back to our hotel together.
They wanted McDonald’s so I walked (still in bare feet) with them to McDonald’s but then I left when I kept getting weird looks for not wearing any shoes, awkward… I guess looking back it was pretty disgusting. My feet were just sticking to the floor the whole time.

Overall the first night wasn’t amazing but it was really great to see everything for the first time! I’d love to go back if I had more money.

Day 8 -Los Angeles (Contiki)

This is the first night I’m sleeping in a nice proper double bed with crisp white sheets tucked in nice and tight, a duvet and four pillows.
I’m sleeping on make-up free pillowcases and I don’t feel I have to use my own pillowcase I brought from home.
If you hadn’t guessed it, I’m staying at a hotel!

Oooh la la I hear you say?
Have I given up on my hostel stays?
Unfortunately not.
I’m starting my Contiki tomorrow morning nice and early so I’m staying at the Miyako Hotel in Downtown LA which is where the Contiki begins.

I’ll write about my day first of all before I go on about the Contiki.

This morning I woke up nice and early at the USA hostel in Hollywood.
I’d pretty much packed my bag last night so I just had a shower, did my make-up and got the last of my belongings from my dorm room quietly as two of the Aussie girls were sleeping.

I checked out of the hostel and left my bags in the storage room that the hostel let’s you use.

This morning, myself and two of my new Aussie friends – Shay and Jarid – went to a Dr Phil taping.
Hahahahaha. I can hear everyone’s laughter from here.
They were already planning to go and as I’m a Dr Phil fan anyways I accompanied them.
I’ve been known to watch a bit of Dr Phil on the TV’s at work in my lunch break so this was an exciting trip for me!

Once we were all ready, off we went on the bus to the Paramount Studios in Los Angeles where they film Dr Phil.

image

As we lined up around 9am, we ended up having to be put in the 2nd show at 10.45am. 😕 as the first taping had become full.
It was a bit annoying having to wait around for nearly another two hours but we just went down to the Diner on the corner and had a really early lunch/late breakfast.
The Diner at first glance looked really average but was surprisingly good.
I ordered a Vanilla shake and a grilled cheese sandwich. Very American of me I know. I’m loving these shakes over here! They’re so thick 🍵

However I can’t quite get over how they use cheddar cheese in like everything here and it’s so yellow!

After we had finished eating it was pretty much time to head back to the studios so we walked back and lined up again.
Once we were selected to go through we ended up having to wait in the sun for like an hour on these seats until the previous group came out from the first episode of filming.
They take your phone’s off you too so we actually had to be social with one another 😄 and not just flick through Instagram and Facebook.

When we finally got through, we were put near the back as Shay and Jarid were wearing jeans and as that’s not very formal we had to kind of be ‘hidden’.
So I recommend if you ever go – wear something nice!
A nice skirt and top with heels, a suit even or a nice pair of pants and dressy top will get you put up the front.
We could still see really well though so I wasn’t complaining.

The show today was about a man called Richard Glossip who’s in jail and is about to be executed as he’s on death row.Susan-Sarandon-responds-to-Piers-Morgan-criticizing-cleavageThey also had the Hollywood actress Susan Sarandon on the show to appeal to the U.S. public to help try to stop the execution of Glossip as she believes he is innocent.
Richard Glossip who is 52, is due to die by lethal injection next month but has always maintained he is not guilty of murder.
He was sentenced to death for his part in the killing of motel owner Barry Alan Van Treese in January 1997.
img-Oklahoma-s-next-to-die-afraid-of-prolonged-painful-deathSarandon said on the show that the scheduled execution in Oklahoma shows everything that is wrong with the death penalty in America.
The fact he was convicted on the testimony of another guy Justin Sneed, who confessed to beating Treese to death with a baseball bat, but said he had been hired to do it by Glossip

She was also saying how people who do much worse get off the death penalty and he wasn’t given a fair trial as in America sometimes having money is all you need to get off lots of things.
I think it airs a few days before September the 16th so you’ll have to watch out for it! (You may even see me in the audience if you’re lucky ;))

Unfortunately I don’t have any pictures of the show as we weren’t allowed to bring cameras or phones in.
I saw Dr Phil’s wife though as she was sitting a few rows down from us. She looks pretty much exactly as she does on TV. Very well-presented and quite ‘perfect’.

When the taping was done (which ran over an hour more than it was meant to) we headed back to Hollywood boulevard and quickly went to Walgreen’s so I could buy some snacks for my Bus Tour tomorrow.

image

Then we went shopping at Forever 21.
Jarid ended up leaving us girls to our own devices and we had a nice shop together, even though I spent the whole time rushing trying to find a dress and heels for Vegas before I had to head to my hotel that night.

I did find a dress from one of the stores on Hollywood Boulevard (it’s pretty but it’s nothing amazing) so I bought it just in case I couldn’t find anything else.
I have yet to get heels though so I’ll have to wait until I go to Vegas tomorrow and try and fit some shopping in!

imageIt was getting a bit late and I needed to get to my next Hotel so Shay and I went back to the Hostel so I could grab my bags. I said my goodbyes to Shay, Jarid and Kevin before I Uber-ed my way to Miyako Hotel.
My Uber girl who picked my up was really nice and we talked the whole way about my trip around the world and her living in LA.
It only cost me $9 for a 23 minute ride to the hotel too. Bargain!! I love uber.

image

When I checked in at my hotel, I went to my room and met my room mate for the night, Lauren. (When you start your Contiki and stay at the Pre-Contiki Hotel, they pair you up with someone on the same Contiki to make the room cheaper for you)
I think every night on the trip you get a different person so it’ll be good to meet lots of new people 🙂
Edit: You get put with a room-buddy for your whole trip and they stay the same, however it’s not the person you’re roomed with on your first pre-contiki night.

At 7pm we all met upstairs in a meeting room (it wasn’t compulsory so only about 20 of us were there)
We talked about any questions we had about the Contiki, where the nearest food places were and filled out some emergency details they needed from us.
Once we were done a few of us headed down the road to eat dinner.
I got frozen yogurt instead of an actual dinner and now I’m starving!!! 😥
That’s what happens when I snack 😐 I don’t feel like a full meal and then later on I get so hungry.

When everyone had gotten something to eat, five of us headed down to a brewery and had some drinks.
Well the boys drunk beer and I just sat and chatted as I always do as I hate beer and they had no other drinks on offer.
I’ve made 4 friends so far + my room mate Lauren so it looks like everyone is going to be pretty friendly.

image

The picture above has a little story to it – as we all sat down at a table in the brewery, I realized someone had left all these stickers on it.
Without any of the boys knowing I successfully put a sticker on each of their backs. Then I got them to play a game with these little bean bags the pub provided, then made the boys all line up to play just so I could take a photo of them with these silly stickers. I couldn’t stop laughing!
They had no idea what I was giggling about the whole time until I eventually told them.
They said they’re going to get me back though so I better watch my back haha.

We headed back to the hotel at around 11.30pm and I packed my bag again and had a shower.
Look how weird our toilet is in the picture below. It has a seat warmer and all these buttons which I have no idea what they do. I was too scared to push any of them to find out.

Now I’m off to sleep!!
It’s nearly 12.30am 😯😯
Have to be ready by 7.15am tomorrow to get all my stuff to the bus, eek!!

Travel Itinerary

image
Air NZ

I’m not going to go into my exact dates of when i’ll be flying, for safety reasons but i’ll write my destination plans! I’ll be flying up to Auckland to spend the night with my best-friend before I leave on my trip. She’s currently pregnant with her first child so by then i’d have had lots of cuddles with her new baby boy!! image First stop is San Francisco – I’ll be staying there for about 5 days and i’m really hoping to go to Alcatraz while i’m there! And maybe even do a little bike ride across the Golden Gate Bridge 🙂 image

Next stop is Los Angeles 🙂 I’ve heard mixed reviews of this glamour town but I feel it’s a must see! I’m worried i’ll overspend here!
image

I’m then heading off for a Contiki Tour across the United States! If you’re un-sure what Contiki is – it’s a Travel Operated Coach Tour which operates in Europe, Egypt, Australia, New zealand, North & South America and Asia.

They do three types of tours –

-Camping Tours (which are the least expensive as you rough it a bit but are really popular with gap year students)
-Budget/concept tours (you stay in backpacker style accommodation or specialized contiki villages and get to meet lots of people, great if you’re going solo like me!)
Superior Tours (most expensive of the tours but you stay in tourist hotels with nicer accommodation)

Thanks Wikipedia!

I’m doing a budget high-energy tour! So my days are spent discovering the sights and thrills of America and partying it up at night. The tour promises twin-share accommodation, breakfast each day plus some dinners at hotels and local restaurants, sight-seeing tours of the major cities and some included activities such as a limo ride down the Las Vegas strip.

As this is my own honest opinion blog, i’ll be writing an honest post about the whole experience when i’ve finished it!

I’ll be starting in Los Angeles and visiting Nevada, Arizona, Utah, Colorado, New Mexico, Texas, Mississippi, Louisiana, Florida, South Carolina, Virginia, Delaware, New Jersey and finishing up in New York 🙂 I’m very excited! As i’m going solo I hope to meet lots of other travellers in the same kind of boat as me. I have a tendency to get really run down when I party too much so I hope that doesn’t happen while i’m on the trip. (It has a bit of a reputation for being a party tour) Then I spend around a week in New York City at the end of my tour! image

I’m most excited to see New York. As far back as I can remember I’ve been dreaming of the day i’ll see NY. When I was little I was obsessed. (I probably watched too many TV shows that featured it haha) I still haven’t booked my accommodation for here so any recommendations for a solo traveller would be great 🙂 Then I’m off to London for a few days before I start another tour!

I’m going to be doing a Top Deck tour for a few weeks around Europe.
It’s very similar to a Contiki (With the ages being 18 to 30-somethings)
But from what I’ve read/heard, Contiki is very party orientated and quite rushed and Top Deck is more about the sights and they have better food apparently!

I’ll have to write another Blog at some point about Contiki vs. Topdeck because when you research online – there’s half the world saying “CONTIKI CONTIKI!!” And the other half is “NOOO Top Deck is the BEST!”

On the Top Deck I’ll be visiting Paris, Switzerland, Venice, Germany & Amsterdam 🙂 then I’m back in London for a few days before I head over to Croatia for a one week sailing trip!

It was very hard choosing whether to do the Greek Island or Croatia for a sailing trip. I’m really gutted I’m not doing the Greek Islands but I couldn’t do everything on my budget 😦
I had to keep reminding myself, ‘The Greek Island will still be there for another day…’
Plus I heard Croatia Sailing is very ‘In’ right now.

When I’m finished up in Croatia I’m off to Rome as It wasn’t included on my Top Deck tour and I really want to see Italy!

Roma is amor

Then It’s off to Dubai for a few nights!
Since I’ll mostly be staying in Hostels & Backpackers, or be with other people on my tours – Dubai’s one of the places I’m slightly nervous about so I won’t be staying in a hostel over there. I’m trying to find some good accommodation that doesn’t cost the earth 😦 I’m really excited to go to The Mall Of Dubai though! I feel I’ll spend a good 2 days there.
I read alot of Flight Attendant Blogs about girls working over in Dubai for Emirates etc… and I get so envious of their lives that it makes me really want to be a flight attendant!

Then It’s on my way home with a stop off in Singapore on the way back. 🙂

Phew. That’s alot of travelling.

I have a long stop over in Australia on the way back home as well. It’s at an odd hour though so I won’t be able to leave the airport and go for a browse or anything. Not that I’d want to I don’t think! I’ll be absolutely knackered.
I can’t sleep on planes.
Me + Flying nowadays isn’t the best thing for my nerves. And can you believe I want to be a flight attendant!
I think with all this stuff happening to planes lately it’s just put me on edge so the slightest bit of turbulence on a flight, my eyes are open and I’m alert.

I’m going to book in with a Hypnotherapist before I go so hopefully that will help 🙂

I hope you’ve enjoyed my itinerary!

As I’ve only just started up my blog, feel free to follow me!!! And ‘like’ any of my posts so I know at least someone’s reading them but my friends 🙂
