Day 53 – The Netherlands, Amsterdam #1

Oh heeey Amsterdam!
The country where you can smoke all the weed you like, choose to legally end your own life and get married to the same sex.
I love this country!
They are so laid back and practical about life that I can understand why everyone is so happy and chilled out there.

20151003_182916.jpg

I was so impressed to see also, how environmentally friendly Amsterdam is. Pretty much everyone owns a bike and bikes everywhere. It’s so flat that I can’t see why you wouldn’t have one.
If you do have a car however, people are usually driving small ones or new ones that don’t use so much gas.
Amsterdam has a goal to be one of the most eco-friendly places in Europe and they’re doing pretty well. They have 300 power hookups around the city to recharge electric cars, solar panels that are apparently being installed on Amsterdam’s historic 17th century townhouses, and infrastructure upgrades that will allow households to sell energy they generate from small-scale wind turbines or solar panels back to the city’s electricity grid for a profit. Banks also give money to people so they can buy energy saving light bulbs for their houses.

image

On the way to our hostel on Saturday, we stopped off to have a cheese and clog demonstration in the Netherlands. (One of the included extras on the Top Deck tour)

image

Basically we went to this farm where a guy makes his own cheese and sells it. There was also a gift store next door so I bought my Mum a cheese grater.
This tour doesn’t sound very exciting does it? Probably because I wasn’t amazed by anything they did.
Like we learnt some facts about cheese and how the total cheese production in Holland is 30 million pounds per week.
Which is alot of cheese!

image

It’s sold everywhere here as well. But we didn’t see anything get made, just told how it was made and tried some slices.
I actually wish i could have bought some cheese but there was no way I was going to take pounds of it to Croatia this weekend.

image

When we arrived at our hostel,  we had about an hour to get ready to go out before our walk around Amsterdam and the Sex show.
1 hour is still not enough time for 6 girls to shower and share 1 mirror! I don’t think our male leader understands.

image

But we made it in the end, even if Kara and I were the last ones on the bus.
As I was down to my last 2 pairs of shoes (nikes and some heeled boots) I had a little trouble walking on all the cobblestones around Amsterdam. I don’t know how the red light district girls do it! Maybe they wear ballet flats to work.

image

image

We checked out a few building around the city centre and then had a walk through the Red Light district when it was still light.
If you have no idea what that is, it’s basically an area of Amsterdam that the locals call, The Rossebuurt.

It’s unlike any other place where women, of all nationalities, parade their bodies in red-fringed window parlous, most of them ready to offer more than just a look in their little private area.

wallen-amsterdam-1024x681

What you’ll see also is lots of men, young and old, couples holding hands and pointing in shock of it all, giggling groups of women celebrating a hen night, and busloads of Japanese tourists with cameras (except not in the direction of the female entertainers as that’s strictly banned!).
It’s a major Amsterdam tourist attraction and there are several tour agencies and independent tour guides offering guided tours.

image

We were left to our own devices for an hour to have a walk around and then meet back to go to the Sex show together.
Myself and the girls wondered around to lots of different shops selling everything from cannabis lollipops, sex stores with ‘pre order your size condoms’ and cannabis ice creams.

image

I’ll be honest here, in Amsterdam they have these things called Coffee shops.
Now they’re not like the cafés back home where you order a muffin and sip on a latte. Instead your muffin is replaced by a hash brownie or space cake and you’re inhaling a joint instead of a latte.

image

When the Dutch government made a law between ‘hard’ and ‘soft’ drugs back in the 1970s, that’s when all these Coffee shops came about. They’re more in a legal ‘grey area’ because while cannabis isn’t actually legal in Amsterdam, it is tolerated.
Basically the City Council, allows coffee shops to operate with the provision of set, non-transferable licences – shown by the display of an official, green and white sticker in the window.
You can’t enter the coffee shops in Amsterdam if you’re under 18 but you’ll know if you’re in one that has cannabis because the people smoking at the table usually give it away.
Its tricky though because even though they have a menu they’re not allowed to do any advertising, you’ll generally not find any details posted on the door or even inside about products with cannabis in it.
You have to ask the person at the counter for the menu, and they’ll give you what you need. A general rule of thumb is: the more expensive, the stronger the weed. For inexperienced smokers a gram of weed will get you high about 6 times and you should be able to make at least 3 joints from a single gram. Ask for advice if you are not sure, these people are here to make sure everything is safe.

image

As I was still sick from the flu/terrible cough on Top Deck I didn’t smoke anything in Amsterdam. Good girl I know! 😇 Also I’m not really a smoking of anything to be honest.
I can’t say the same for what I ate though…

image

Once we’d explored, we all grouped together and went to an Amsterdam sex show.
Prostitution, brothels, sex shows etc… are all legal in Amsterdam. The government is basically like, if you’re going to do it we’d rather you be safe. You can’t do it if you’re younger than 21. If you’re a prostitute you’re required to register and then they receive a registration pass with a photograph and a registration number, but no name or other personal data.
The companies who run stuff like this also have to have a license and you all have to pay your taxes.
Fair enough I guess.

image

So off to the Sex show we went. It went pretty much as you can imagine. Basically like watching porn right in front of you. Not gonna lie, had to look away a few times because it got a bit awkward. Especially as there was just 2 Top Deck groups in the place and we were all young.
It ended fine though, one of the girls got a couple of people up on stage from the tours to have a bit of a laugh with so we were all giggling by the end.

image

Is it bad that I can’t remember what happened after that….
I think we all went to this club which was next to a hostel so it was just filled with people on Top deck/Contiki Tours. I think I got a bit drunk/stoned so I was on a pretty chill mood. Nothing was really happening at the club apart from the rugby game and a bit of music so I left around 1am with a few others from Top deck.
Aaahh, I nearly forgot. I had the most amazing waffle on the way home.

image

Let me just say, Amsterdam is a stoners paradise. FOOD IS EVERYWHERE.
Everything you can bloody think of is lit up in store windows.
Waffles, Crepes with Strawberries and Cream and Bacon and Cheese, Cupcakes and Croissants, Sausages and Frites (fries) with 20 different sauces. Anything you feel like is probably open at 2am. No wonder I’ve gotta tuck my stomach into my jeans now. I’m serious as well, I’ve lost all my tone-ness I ever had before I left.
Fml.
I couldn’t live in the Netherlands purely for the fact I’d be the size of a house.
Xx

Day 48 – Switzerland

Monday:
Today our tour company Top Deck had an optional activity for a train ride up to Jungfrau which is one of the main summits of the Bernese Alps.
It’s 3,466 meters above sea level on the boundary between the cantons of Bern and Valais, halfway between Interlaken (where we were staying) and Fiesch.

Even after I’ve explained all that, I didn’t actually go haha!
It cost like over $200 NZD just to take the train up and back down and I couldn’t spend that much money for those views. My budget for my world wide trip just wouldn’t allow it!
Especially to see some snowy mountains that I can get a picture of online.

Jungfraujoch - Top of Europe

(But yes, I know it’s more for the experience)

image

Instead, Kara, Kelly & I got ready and went for a walk down to the local town of Interlaken.
I didn’t bring my jacket (just my hoodie) with me so I jogged half of the way to warm myself up as it was freezing!
We browsed a few shops and I bought a magnet. It was far too expensive in Switzerland to buy anything else to take home.

imageAround lunch time we went to Hooters as I’d never been before and had lunch.
We shared nachos and chicken strips and curly fries.
The nachos would have been great it they had more beans on them! 😣

We also went to this really nice chocolate shop and I had the nicest white chocolate passion fruit mousse chocolate!

image

There were a couple of really yummy cake stores but I restrained myself from all the goodies!!

image

When we were done looking around we headed back to the hotel and had a stop off at the supermarket to buy lots of Swiss chocolate. 🍫
The girls then had a nap while I did some room exercise 😁
I’ve become so much less toned than I was when I left home so I was feeling a bit yuck about myself. I bought out the 30 day ab challenge and did crunches and toe touches on my bedroom floor 😥
It must have worked a little bit because I woke up the next morning with slightly sore abs haha.

I also wrote a blog and listened to a bit of music. We weren’t really in a place where there was lots happening so it was nice just to chill out for a bit.

When I went downstairs, I bumped into another girl on my trip Ashleigh and she told me how she’d gotten an outfit for Oktoberfest down the road at the Lidhl supermarket.

Oktoberfest is this beer festival in Germany and we’re going to be there when it’s happening but everyone dresses up! I’ve heard outfits are really expensive in Germany so it was good to know that the supermarket was selling some cheap knock off versions of the outfits.

image

Me and the girls walked down to the supermarket and as Kelly already had one, Kara and I bought the same outfit. They only had Pink or Blue colors to choose from so I got the pink. However mine is quite long though so I’ll see about shortening it if I get the chance.

image

We didn’t really do too much for the rest of the day. We met everyone for dinner which was Chicken and veges AND we got some apple strudel for dessert, yum! I love it when we get dessert. (Which is why I have to start doing more sit ups)

image

Happy hour was happening again at the bar underground so we went to that and I used up my last 5 francs of Swiss money on 2 large ciders. I left pretty early after that (around 12pm) and went back to bed for a semi-early night.

image

Overall it was a pretty chilled out day in Switzerland.
It’s such a beautiful place and everything is so picturesque, the grass is so green, the roads are nice and the streets are clean.
Apart from being it being so beautiful, I felt we were in are pretty quiet place with not much to do. Plus it’s so expensive I couldn’t ever live there.

image

They do have stuff to do like rafting and helicopter tours etc… so if you like really nice views and adventure sports you’d love Switzerland. Unfortunately we hadn’t had anything planned through Top Deck to do stuff like that.

Day 46 – Paris

Bonjour from Paris!!

Today was my second day in the city of love on my Top Deck Tour.

Our driver from our tour was taking everyone into the city so we had to be on the bus by 9.15am – which isn’t that early. However I woke up still feeling sick from my flu so considered staying in bed and going out exploring later.

I’m glad I got up and caught the coach though because I did start to feel better around lunch time.
Kara, Kelly & I got off the coach with our red lipstick freshly applied just before the Louvre pyramid and found this cute french Macaroon shop where we each bought a Macaroon.

imagewpid-20150926_094828.jpgAfter we’d had our French treats (I got a strawberry flavor) we headed over to The Louvre and basically just walked around taking pictures.

image
The sun was a little too bright to get a good picture

image

We checked out the Arc de Triomphe again (as we’d seen it the night before from the bus) which honors those who fought and died for France in the French Revolutionary and the Napoleonic Wars.
It has all the names of the French victories and generals inscribed on the inner and outer surfaces and beneath its vault lies the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier from World War I.

image

Just a note also, when we were checking out these sights. We had this lady come up to us saying “do you speak English?” With some piece of paper in her hand.
I assumed she wanted directions to somewhere so I said yes, she then proceeded to try and get me to sign my name and where I was from on this piece of paper as some petition ‘for the children’
They then try and get money off you which I actually didn’t have any of!
I hadn’t been to an ATM yet so I literally had no Euros on me. Not that I would have given any money to her anyways.
When she realized I didn’t have anything she scowled at me and stormed off to try and scam the next person.
They’re everywhere near the Louvre so just be wary if you ever visit. They get super annoying and really just want your money.

image

The above picture is the statue of Joan of Arc which was commissioned by the French government following the defeat of the country in the 1870 Franco-Prussian War.

image

Once we had seen a few famous places, including The Palais Garnier (as shown above) – a 1,979-seat opera house, we headed to Sephora so Kara and I could have a browse (we’re both Sephora lovers haha)
I bought another Urban Decay eye-shadow Naked Pallet (number 3 if you’re a make up freak like me and want to know)

image

We then walked 20 minutes to the Moulin Rouge and took a couple of snappies.
By this stage we were getting a bit hungry so went to a restaurant nearby and sat in the sun.
My throat was still sore so I ordered a bowl of ice-cream haha (any excuse right?) And a lemonade. Which unfortunately wasn’t the same type of lemonade that America does. 😐

imageimage

The girls ordered some cheeses and meats which I only tried a little bit of. I don’t have the taste buds for all these different cheeses. I’ll eat Camembert and a bit of Brie but don’t really like the super fancy french cheeses like most people do.
We decided to head to the Eiffel Tower after lunch so took the bus and got off just before the tower.
The girls had a bike tour that started at 3pm which I didn’t sign up for (I wasn’t sure how I’d be feeling) but I did have a ticket for a river cruise.
We split up and I went on my way to do my river cruise.
The river cruise was a good opportunity to take pictures of the French scenery.
The boat was pretty crowded but I got a good seat at the front.

I think they needed to organise the cruise a bit better. When we were all boarding everyone was pushing and shoving trying to get on. There was no lines or anything for people to board in a ‘mannerly fashion’ so it was basically just shove until you got to the front.
I listened to my iPod the whole time and looked at the sights around me while taking pictures on my phone.
They did have information about all the bridges we passed over from an audio loud speaker but it played in French, then English, then Mandarin and repeated it with every single sight that I couldn’t be bothered listening anymore.

(Me and my beautiful boat hair)

image

The ride went for about 45 minutes so when it was finished we all pushed each other off and I headed off to buy myself a magnet for my souvenir collection.
I found one from one of the many souvenir shops that Paris had then went and sat down at a cafe and ordered a hot chocolate.
I thought being in Paris they’d do amazing hot chocolates but I was actually a bit disappointed with mine. It just tasted more like hot chocolate-y water than anything else.
Oh well, It was nice to just sit in the sun and people watch.

image

I felt slightly peckish after my drink so went down the road and came across this cute bakery where I got myself a raspberry filled donut thing.
It looked like a donut but it didn’t really taste like one…
So I’m not sure if that’s actually what it was.
It was nice anyways!

image

I must look weird eating all this sugary food walking around in my gym gear all the time haha.
I’m case you’re wondering, I only have gym pants and 1x pair of jeans in my suitcase with me – hence why I wear a lot of the same outfits throughout my blog.
Everything else I packed are dresses or shorts and Paris was just way too cold to be wearing them.

image

I was getting pretty tired and knew the girls would still be on their bike tour so I headed over to one of the grassy areas next to the Eiffel Tower. Unfortunately my iPod had run out of battery so I lay down with my handbag as my pillow in the grass and listened to silence from my earphones.
There’s lots of guys at the Eiffel Tower selling souvenirs and they come up to you like every 2 minutes so the headphones in the ears is a good way to act like you’re busy/can’t hear them.
I think I actually dozed in and out of sleep because the time went by really fast and before I knew it it was 6.30pm.

image

I messaged Kelly and met up with them underneath the Eiffel Tower so we could go and find out Top deck group and have our Top deck provided picnic.
Our tour guide wasn’t very clear with where to meet so we walked around for a few minutes trying to find the rest of the group and eventually did a short walk awhile from the Eiffel Tower.

image

Our tour guide and bus driver had set up a cold picnic of chicken drumstick things, salads, crackers and cheese, potato salad and some macaroons and pie slices.
It was all good to eat but I was kind of feeling like some hot food by this stage.
Being in Paris you can actually get over eating breads and cheeses believe it or not.

image

When we’d all finished our picnic under (well really near) the Eiffel tower, all the girls went to the coach to get changed into some nicer clothes as we were going to a Cabaret show that night.
It started around 9.30pm so we were driven to the place and as we were early, went to a bar next door for a few drinks.

I didn’t even get a drink, I lined up for the bathroom and by the time I actually ended up going it was time to leave!

image

The Cabaret was good. If you’ve never been to one, it’s basically a show which has music, singing, dancing or drama and is shown at some type of venue like a restaurant or a night club type place.. The audience, often dining or drinking, does not typically dance but usually sits at tables and it’s all introduced by an MC. It’s often (but not always) oriented towards adult audiences, so we did see lots of boobies from the females dancing around.

image

Being honest (and everyone else said the same thing) it wasn’t amazing. For €65 it was a bit meh.
We got 3 bottles of wine per table and one of the guys at our table even fell asleep!
Some parts of the show were interesting but I got a bored and it annoyed me how some of the dancers were out of tune with the other dancers.

We left after 11pm and headed back to the hostel.
I went straight to bed! I was knackered! 😴😴
There was some drinks at the bar going on downstairs but I just couldn’t manage another late night.

Xx
