Day 39 – New York City (6)

This was one of my favourite days in New York so far!
After having another bit of a sleep in (I know I can’t help it! 😴😴) I finally dragged myself out of bed and headed off to Central Park.

image

On the way, I remembered to make a phone call to this lady in Washington DC who’s also a kiwi. She’s been a nanny in America for like the past 7 years and loves it. She actually helps girls through an au pair agency get jobs over here but she hasn’t done it in awhile. I inquired at this au pair agency online a few days ago and they contacted her about me. So yeahhh.
We had a chat about what I had to do to work here, what it all kind of involves etc… so she’s going to send me some info and then I’ll decide what to do when I eventually get home. It’s still just kind of an idea at the moment.

After I got off the phone, I walked towards central park and then came across a street of shops I’d never seen before! It had Sephora and Whole Foods and was only like a 5 minute walk away from the hostel. Why did I not know this! 😣
I immediately went to whole foods as it was lunch time by then and I was a bit hungry.
After being very indecisive and looking at all the food like 5 times, I decided I was too poor and not hungry enough so left without buying anything.

(Side note: as I write this, the girl above me in the bunk in my hostel – her phone is going off like every 30 seconds with THE most annoying noise. It’s like the sound of a tap dripping and it’s driving me insane. Not to mention every time she moves her bunk screeches like anything. I want to kick her.)

Carrying on…
After my Whole foods fail, I went across the road to this sports store and looked through all their Nike shoes. I was going to buy 2 pairs but ended up deciding on these ones. For $59

image

Finally I was on my way to Central Park. There were lots of people there as they were doing a big walk for people who have Down syndrome and their families. They had a big fair set up as well which was pretty cool.
I found a nice spot in the grass and had a bit of a lay down. I listened to my music and rested my eyes which was nice.
I think I’ve pulled a nerve (can you even do that? Maybe I mean pinched a nerve) in my leg from all this walking so I didn’t go for a big central park walk today.

image

I was messaging NZ Alicia while I was at the park and we decided to meet up at 5pm to go up the top of Rockfeller Centre. By this stage it was after 1pm so I went down the road and had some Subway for lunch and then TOOK the subway to Times Square haha.

image

I had found this hair extension place online so went in search of it. I have hair extensions and they were nearly at the stage of needing maintenance done (which means they lift them up higher to your scalp again) and luckily this place was able to do them!!
I’m so glad I found them as it’s difficult finding a place that does the same method as what’s currently in my hair. It was more expensive than what I pay back home but at least I got them done and won’t have to worry about them for the rest of my trip.

When I left, it was about 4.20pm and I didn’t realise how far away I was from the rockfeller. It was good I had my running gear on so I half walk/half ran to meet Alicia and Miriam at the Bottom of the rock as they had my ticket.
We had booked it for 5pm so I got there with 3 minutes to spare.
Me being all sweaty, took the lift to the 67th floor with them and it was defintaly worth the $30.

image

The Rockefeller Center is actually a combination of 19 commercial buildings covering 22 acres between 48th and 51st streets in New York City.
It was created by the Rockefeller family, in Midtown Manhattan between Fifth Avenue and Sixth Avenue.
The part that we went up is called 30 Rockefeller centre. Also known as 30 Rock. It’s 70 stories high and is home to the Observation deck (Top of the rock)
It doesn’t take long to get to the top in the elevator. But when you do, the views are just incredible. I’d love to see it in the winter time.
I even said to one of the girls, my future husband needs to hire out this entire observation deck and propose to me on a beautiful evening. Hahaha (just incase my future husband is reading this, there’s a hint)
But please, be careful not to drop my Tiffany ring.

image

There were a few people up there but it wasn’t overly crowded. I think they only let a certain number up at once.
The only thing though was it was a bit windy so my hair was blowing all over the place which didn’t take for a great picture 😯 not to mention I was sweaty from my run and my hair needed a brush haha.

image

image

But I did get some great shots of Central Park itself. It’s crazy how big it is! And it’s right in the center of a city. Crazy.

There’s more pictures on my Facebook if you want to check it out.

I think we stayed up there for like 45 minutes, maybe more. Even though you’re only meant to spend 15.
I even put my earphones in and played Empire State Of Mind by jay – Z and Alicia Keys to really get into the zone. Haha.

When we got back to the streets, we decided to go out for dinner to this Indian restaurant that Miriam found on Google maps.
On the way there we took some pictures at the LOVE sign NYC has.

image

When we found the restaurant, we saw that they had a special for $17.99 where you got an entree each, a main curry, rice and a dessert which we thought was a great deal!
It was really yummy and the Mango Lassi’s were only $2.50 score! I love them

With our massively full bellies, we finished our meals and headed off to take the subway home.
Even though it was a Saturday night, I was so knackered I didn’t even open an alcoholic drink.
Instead it was time to charge my phone and write a blog.

It’s currently Sunday night as I write this and I really must go to sleep. I have to check it of here by 11am tomorrow as I’m off to London! Woohoo.

Day 36 – New York City #2

I’m writing this blog as I sit on the Subway at 3am in the morning. Gaaah, my Contact lenses are just so dry.

My morning started off at 9.30am, all showered and dressed ready for my morning run at Central Park.
I went the right way this time and was at Central park in under 10 minutes.
It’s honestly such a pretty place to go to. There’s so many different areas to explore you could be there all day.

image

image

I didn’t really know where I was going, I just ran (mostly walked) for the next 3 hours or so.
I know! I sat down once that whole time. I really wish I had a pedometer so I know how many steps I’ve been taking exploring NYC.

image

I had a walk through the garden part of the park which was quite pretty if you’re into that sort of thing. I saw that they do free walking tours of the garden for like 75 minutes. I really don’t know what you could talk about for over an hour 😴

image

image

I headed off in search of the Bow Bridge which is always shown in movies or pictures of Central Park.
On the way I stopped for a cheeky chocolate magnum for breakfast as well. (Health freak I know)

image

And I also had to take pictures of this amazing view!
I wish I had a selfie stick or something so I could take a picture of me in front of this landscape.
The downfalls of solo travelling…

image

I did eventually find the bow bridge but I didn’t walk across it. I more just took lots of pictures of it from afar haha.
There were a few people in boats rowing around the lake as well which was pretty cute.

image

image

After taking pictures I went and sat down in one of the grassy areas.
I was pretty much surrounded by children and what I assumed where all their nannies.
I then decided to sign up for a nanny agency while sitting there for New York haha.
That’s what I’m really wanting to do at the moment, move to New York and become a nanny for a year at least. It’s just finding the right family and the right company to go through! Anyone got any ideas?

image

Or maybe any other ideas on how I can work in New York without becoming a doctor or something they desperately need?

image

Once I was finished at the park, I was txting my friend Harley organising dinner for later tonight when he mentioned about going to The High Line. It’s basically a public park built on a historic freight rail line elevated above the streets on Manhattan’s West Side.
I took the subway there (which I’m getting pretty good at I might add) and walked some of the high line.
It actually goes from around the Meatpacking District to West 34th Street but I was getting too hot and had walked way too much already I thought it’d be time for some food.

image

I walked down to the popular Chelsea market complex to get something to eat.
It’s all inside and fills an entire city block with a connecting bridge over Tenth Avenue to the adjacent 85 Tenth Avenue building, which was also part of the Nabisco complex but is now separately owned. (This is the place that invented the Oreo Cookie!!)

image

It has so many food places inside, a bit of shopping, office spaces upstairs for tenants and also some TV production facilities for companies like Food network and EMI Music publishing.

image

I also found out that more recently, Google has moved into some of the second, third, and fourth floors along with YouTube on the fifth.

image

I wasn’t sure what to eat so ended up just grabbing a lemonade and a slice of Italian Pizza.
While I was eating, my friend from Contiki messaged me and we decided to meet up in Times Square.

image

I took the Subway again and met her in the centre of times square.
We did a bit of shopping and grabbed a juice and some M&M’s from m&m world together 🙂
I also got 2 pairs of new gym pants to wear back home.
I’ve been to my fave gym store Lululemon here but i actually don’t like any of the patterns/styles they have out at the moment. It’s all really disappointing so I’m hoping my Forever 21 gym pants will do the job.

image

By the time I left Times Square it was about 7pm so I headed back to my hostel to have a shower and get ready to meet my old flatmate Harley and his girlfriend Monica for dinner in Brooklyn.

image

I took 2 trains to get there but it was still pretty easy.
We went and had some yummy thai food and then went out to Harley’s friends house a 15 minute drive away.

There was about 5 of us sitting around drinking (me – not so much) I was knackered!
We didn’t end up leaving until about 2.30am and so I took the subway home.
It was a little bit dodgy but I was probably just over thinking it.
The first subway that came I didn’t think was the one I was meant to be on so I didn’t get on.
Turns out it was the correct one so i had to wait 20 minutes for the next one.

image

Eventually it came, and then we had to stop for like 6 minutes for some problem on the track. The whole subway ride was about 40 minutes and when I did eventually get to my stop it was at a different entrance that I usually exit out of so had to walk 10 minutes to my hostel trying to figure out where I was!
I’m not doing very good on the safety front am i…

I am now currently in bed at my hostel and thought I would finish this blog off.
I was really quiet so as not to disturb the other 3 girls in my dorm room.
1 is snoring right now. *sigh*
😴😴

Day 35 – New York City

🎶Neeeew Yorrrrrrrk, concrete jungle where dreams are made of
There’s nothin’ you can’t do
Now you’re in Neeeew Yorrrrrk
These streets will make you feel brand new
The lights will inspire you
Let’s hear it for New York, New York,
New York!! 🎶

Did you know I’m in New York?
Has my snapchat and facebook been clear enough? 😯
Haha!

After my night last night you’d think I’d wake up in a terrible mood but I can’t when I’m waking up in Nyc!
I did eventually get out of bed around 9am-ish. So much for my run at Central Park this morning.

I showered and washed my hair under a shitty – ish stream of water.
I think I just got a bad shower to be honest, the other one I used last night was fine.
The bathrooms here are always clean and nice, I don’t know why people wouldn’t stay in a hostel if you’re by yourself or even with 1 other person. (You can get private rooms) they’re honestly so much cheaper and funner!

Every hostel I’ve been to so far has an outdoor area, game night’s, comedy nights, pub crawls, beer pong, laundry and even a cafe of some sort usually.

The hostel here in Nyc has all those things (but the beer pong)
Tonight downstairs in the movie room they have a comedy night going but it was too cold down there so I came up to my room instead.

Anyways, I’ve gone off track…

Once I was ready for my day, I headed downstairs (for the second time coz I lost my room key some where in between showering and going back to my room) and had a bagel for breakfast with lots of cream cheese.
And of course a lemonade! 🍋🍋

image

I headed down to the subway after that and took the train to Times Square.
Even sitting in Times Square is amazing in itself.
There is just shops and lights everywhere!!
I was meeting my friend Diogenes from the Contiki but first off I was off to MAC cosmetic *my fave* to buy some make up.

image

I ended up getting a new concealer because I lost mine (or someone took it) in Washington.

image

And a new blush as I’d just run out

image

And some bronzer

image

I also got one of their new Vamplify limited edition lip gloss colours that the girl just raved about.

image

Next stop was Sephora.
I just want to buy that whole store when I’m there 😥
I ended up buying another Naked Urban decay eyeshadow pallet.
If you’ve never used the Naked Pallets and you love eyeshadow, It’s seriously the best eyeshadow out there! (Even if it’s a bit spendy)

image

Once I’d bought my stuff, I met Diogenes at toys’r’us. I’ve never seen a store so cool for kids before haha.
They had a ferris wheel inside and an ice cream shop, a jurassic theme part with a dinosaur that moved, a barbie section and a candy store!

image

Diogenes bought some gifts for his sister and cousin and then we headed off somewhere else.
I ended up stopping at a Macaroon store and buying one along with another lemonade because I was so thirsty.

image

image

Everywhere we’d walk I swear I had to stop and “just quickly have a look” in one of the stores.
We even went to the Tiffany & Co. Store where I just felt extremely poor when I had to ask the price of everything.
Anyone got a spare $6g? I’m really in love with this bracelet.

image

After we’d had a look around, we took the Subway to central park and got some street food. I had a falafel (again) but on rice and we went and sat in the park on the grass to eat.

image

Basically our day was just filled with shopping and alot of walking.
I still feel like I have so much to see though it’s crazy!
But I’m quickly running out of money so I need to find out cheap things to do in New York haha.
Tomorrow I’m meant to be hanging out with my friend who actually lives in New York so I’m not quite sure what we’re doing (if he replies!)

image

Now that I’m back at the hostel, I’ve spent the afternoon sitting outside updating my blog. Which is why there’s like 4 new blogs at once.
I started getting hit on by some mexican guy that added me to facebook (and I promptly deleted) when I got inside. I must be looking bloody lonely today coz a guy asked me for my number on the subway too just as I was about to get off. I quickly shook my head no and jumped off. Awks!

I think it may be time for a quick shower and some sleepy time. I’m really keen for this run tomorrow!

Sweet dreams from New York! 🌉
