Day 51 – Munich

As our whole Top Deck tour wanted to go to Oktoberfest we left Venice at 5.30am to make the 7 hour drive to Munich, Germany.

image

We had a stop off in Austria which was actually really nice with all their mountains and stuff. We stopped off at a gas station/bakery and they had the nicest selection of croissants and filled donut things. I again, had some self control and didn’t have any.  😥

image

image

We got caught up in Traffic around 12.30pm (I know this because I was busting to go to the bathroom) so our driver pulled over at this picnic stop so people could go to the bathroom and we had our packed picnic lunch on fold-out chairs with it all set out on a table.

On the way to our hostel, we had a stop off at the Dachau Concentration Camp which is on the grounds of an abandoned munitions factory not far from Munich.
It was one if the first concentration camps opened in Germany which was meant to hold political prisoners but eventually was enlarged to include forced labor and the imprisonment of Jews and ordinary Germans.

image

It was quite sad to walk around and see how prisoners lived and then read about how they were all in constant fear of brutal treatment from the guards and being forced into standing cells. Also, how they had roll call every morning and had to stand in lines outside for hours. Even if someone had died, they’d have to drag their body to the roll call just so they could be accounted for. There were 32,000 documented deaths at the camp, and thousands that are undocumented.

image

I think it’s free to go to the camp/memorial. We spent about 2 hours there and we still didn’t see everything.
There’s a lot of stuff to read and they have the gas chambers etc there to have a look at. It can be quite emotional for some people so it’s probably good we did it before Oktoberfest. Makes you realize how lucky you are to grow up in a time where stuff like that doesn’t happen in NZ.

image

We didn’t actually get to Munich until 5pm so we had to check in quickly and then be back at the bus by 6pm so we could all head off to Oktoberfest. There were 6 girls in my room so imagine 6 of us trying to use 2 mirrors while getting changed and doing our hair in a small space. Drama!
I was lucky because I did my whole make up on the coach beforehand so all I needed to do was my hair and get into my outfit. Otherwise I think I would have only been wearing some mascara haha.

image

(This is me and one of my 6 room- mates, Ashleigh)
Kara and I got matching outfits as we got ours from the same supermarket as her haha.

image

It looked pretty cool though, when we got to Oktoberfest everyone was wanting photos with us or OF us because we were matching.

image

Oktoberfest is pretty crazy! I couldn’t believe how big it was. It’s funny how it’s called Oktoberfest but it’s actually in September. Back in the day it originally took place during the 16 days up to, and including, the first Sunday in October.

image

In 1994, the schedule was modified in response to German reunification so that if the first Sunday in October falls on the 1st or 2nd, then the festival would go on until October 3 (German Unity Day).

image

If you’re ever in Munich during September, its defintaly a must-do.
There’s no entrance fee, you just have to pay for your alcohol and if you want any food.
A pint is usually €10.50. They must make so much money as more than 6 million people from around the world attend the event every year.
I actually hate beer, so i didnt get really drunk when i was there. They only sell beer and Radlei  (which is a mixture of lemonade and beer) so I ended up drinking that the whole time.

image

If you don’t drink, it’s still cool to go and experience. They have amusement rides, sidestalls and games (kids can attend this too) as well as so much food!!
German food tastes so good! They have stuff like Hendl (roast chicken), Schweinebraten (roast pork),Schweinshaxe (grilled ham hock),Steckerlfisch (grilled fish on a stick), Würstl(sausages) which is what I had as well as potato dumplings, cheese noodles and these big iced cookies which i really wanted to buy but didn’t.

image

The festival finishes at 10pm, so when it’s over you don’t really hang around because the music stops playing and drinks stop getting served. Oh yeah, another thing we didn’t know when we got there is that you can’t just go up and buy a drink. You have to have a table and one of the beer girls comes and brings beer to you and you just pay her. To get a table you can reserve one, otherwise just hope to god that there’s a spare one. We got there late so we didn’t have one but some guys waved us over and we joined them so that was lucky – It probably helped that all our boobs were pushed up to the ceiling in our outfits.

It was a long walk back to the hostel at 10.30pm. We didn’t think it was that far but I’m sure we walked for like over an hour! Haha.

So yeah, I didn’t really experience the sights of Munich. Just the festival as we were off at 8am the next morning for our next destination!

Day 47 – Switzerland

This won’t be a very long blog because I didn’t do much but sit on a bus.

When I woke up on my last day in Paris, Kara, Kelly and I took  our bags down stairs for the bus and then went out for a breakfast at a cafe for our last morning.
We have provided breakfasts on Top Deck already but we weren’t too keen on it as it was just your typical cereals and breads. They didn’t even have croissants!

Instead, we went down the road and got a table outside a French Cafe and ordered breakfast. It was about €8 each and we got a croissant, piece of baguette, a hot chocolate/coffee and a glass of orange juice. (a bit expensive for New Zealand terms)

image

When it was about 9am we headed back to the hostel to catch the bus to Switzerland.
I sat at the front (I love sitting there, you can see everything!) But ended up sleeping for the first few hours haha.

We all played a game on the bus ‘2 truths and a lie’ where everyone has to go up one by one and say 2 truths about them and 1 lie but we have to guess what one is the lie.
My lie was that I was home schooled until I was 12 haha. I think I used the same one on my Contiki trip as well when we played that game.

By the end of doing like 40 people I started to drift off and not pay much attention. Some of them were pretty funny though.

image

We had a stop off for lunch where we had a similar lunch to that of the Eiffel Tower picnic.
There was a chicken salad and coleslaw with crackers and cheese and a chocolate loaf bread thing.
By this stage I still hadn’t had any hot food! I was craaaaving something warm in my tummy!

image

I did take lots of pictures of our little Top deck mascot, Maggie. She was loving it at the picnic.

image

When we got back on the bus, I was DJ so I sat up the front with our driver Antonio. I wanted to sleep but he said I had to stay awake and talk to him so as not to be boring. 😣

image

Switzerland was like a 7 hour coach drive from Paris but it took us about 9 hours because of us stopping for toilet breaks and 2 food stops.

image

We eventually arrived at our hotel around 6.30pm.

image

image

Well, it wasn’t really a hotel. It felt like an a couple of older houses made into rooms, similarly set up like a hostel (4-6 people in each room) and we shared the bathrooms.
They did have an underground bar and kitchen however and a Jacuzzi, hammock area, dining area etc.

I went straight to my room once I was off the bus.
I was sharing with 3 other girls who I hadn’t really talked to before which was fine. I was missing my 2 K girls though! (Kara and Kelly)
I was in desperate need of a hair wash so washed my hair and re-did my make up which ended up making me late for dinner.
I only missed out on the cheese fondue though, and apparantly it wasn’t that nice so I wasn’t too bothered.

Dinner was pork sausage with vegetables which I didn’t actually mind.

image

After dinner we all headed down the the club where they had a happy hour going for us. 2 beers (or ciders yay!) For 5 Swiss franc.
(Probably ends up being around $11 NZ but it’s cheap for Swizzerland)

The Swiss get paid really well here I heard. The minimum wage is around €22 because the cost of living is so high. Their health care is really good too apparently and I’ve actually never seen one homeless person since I’ve been here.
It’s a really tidy, clean, green, nice country.
Not to mention it being very safe, even if they let everyone here own a gun.

image

Anyways, we danced the night away (well I did until 1.30am) and then went back to my room after I couldn’t stop coughing from being sick earlier in the week.

Next blog: 1st full day in Switzerland

Day 14 – Albuquerque

Tuesday:

Waking up the next morning in Durango, I got up to be on the bus by 9.30am to go river rafting!
A few of us from Contiki went rafting and the rest went horse riding. (You got to choose what one you wanted to do)
We were all pretty hungover from last night and the river rafting was really easy and casual so it was just what we needed I think.
I did jump into the river and it was pretty cold! So that woke me up.

you-can-see-people-white
I didn’t take my camera with me, so this is just a Google Picture of what it’s like

It took over an hour but it was nice just to float down the river and yarn about our New Zealand and Aussie accents to our American tour guide.
As we were floating down the river, I saw these little squirmy things in the water underneath the sand. Our tour guide said that they were like little snakes but they were harmless. This got us talking about snakes and I announced that we had no snakes in New Zealand but Australia was known for them.
One of the guys Ben then quickly said “No, I used to live in New Zealand and we have snakes”
Then the other New Zealander, Dave chimed in “Yeah there’s lots of snakes”
Me “Uhh, no there are defiantly NO snakes in New Zealand”
Dave “Oh course there are! I’m sure you’ve seen plenty”
Me “What the fuck, I have never ever seen a snake in New Zealand”
Dave “Yeah, the Trouser Snake”
Me “I have never heard of that type of Snake, You must be thinking of Australia”
Ben “Oh yeah Australia defiantly has them as well but I also know that NZ does”
Me – Getting annoyed by this point “What! No we don’t have ANY Snakes. I know this because my Mum has a massive phobia of snakes and that’s one of the reasons she moved to New Zealand from Australia”
Dave “Well I don’t think she got away from the Trouser Snake”
By this stage the boys were laughing but I still couldn’t figure out how they thought we had Snakes in New Zealand.
Even our Tour Guide joined in “Oh yeah! No we learnt about Snakes in School and New Zealand defiantly has them”
I was actually getting angry because I knew I was right and they were wrong.
It wasn’t until they made a little hand motion towards their nether-regions about 10 minutes into this conversation and said “You know, the Trouseeer snake” that I finally clicked what they meant.
*Sigh* they got me there.

Once we were all finished with rafting and horse riding, I went and got some food from the supermarket and we all met and boarded the bus to Albuquerque.imageAlbuquerqueAlbuquerque is the biggest city in New Mexico and it’s no wonder as they have around 270 days of sunny blue skies every year. Albuquerque is also known as The “Hot Air Ballooning Capital of the World” as it’s home to the International Balloon Fiesta, the world’s largest gathering of balloons from around the world. This event takes place during the first week of October every year so we were about a month too early to see this!
Breaking Bad was also produced in Albuquerque for all you Breaking Bad fans 🙂

We arrived here around 5pm this afternoon.
To be honest apart from the rafting, it’s been a very basic day. We’ve had a few stops on the way to get food etc… but it’s pretty much been a bus day which involves sleeping, listening to music or watching a movie on the bus.imageimageI’m now currently in bed at a hotel in Albuquerque. We all had a buffet dinner (lasagna, fish, chicken and salads to choose from) and then we did some karaoke at the Hotel we’re staying at. (Well I just watched the karaoke as I have a terrible singing voice)imageI went to bed pretty early as I wanted to finish doing all my washing, write up a blog and call my best-friend.
Not all the places you stay at have washing machines and driers so when you have a hotel stop that provides laundry it’s first in, first served!

Now that I’ve written this, I defiantly think it’s sleep time!!
😴
