Day 5 – Los Angeles

HOLLYWOOD IS WHERE I’M AT!! 🍹🍹
I made that first line seem like I’m having the time of my life drinking cocktails when I have yet to have an alcoholic beverage haha.

I made the silly mistake this morning in San Francisco of not checking when the BART started running. I got to the BART station at 7.30am and it didn’t open until 8am with the first train leaving for the airport at 8.30am.
So I was there a whole hour early with my backpack on rearing to go for my 10am flight at SFO with no transport. In my defence I did tell the lady at the hostel where I was going and she didn’t say anything about it not running that early…

image

It was a a Sunday morning in SF so it was light out but there wasn’t anyone around apart from the odd morning runner and 50 homeless guys with their trolleys and bags filled to the brim with their life in it.
And also me. With my bag with my life in it.

image

image

I ended up calling a shuttle and they said it wouldn’t get to me until 8am so I said that was fine and waited outside some nice hotel. I pretty much sat on the sidewalk as there were no chairs or anything and took some pictures of my surroundings and the ole’ selfie snap.

image

image

(By the way my arm looks so weird and long in this picture)

image

At just after 8am I got a call on my phone but as I was already doing something on it I accidentally clicked ‘end call’ instead of picking it up.
I assumed it was my shuttle company so tried calling back and it was engaged. I looked around me and couldn’t see a shuttle so I just waited a bit longer.

image

Finally, I got through to them and he said that the shuttle had come and hadn’t seen me waiting so left without me :|:|
Turned out I was at like the side entrance of this hotel and not at the main one. That’s probably why they missed me 😧

image

Eventually it all sorted itself out, I got to the airport on time and checked in. Paid $25 for my bag with Delta Airlines and had to wait around for just over an hour as my 10am flight got delayed until 11am.
The SFO Delta terminal isn’t that interesting with all that time to spare. I did a bit of yoga (yes they have a yoga room at the airport 😮) and walked around the 3 main cafes being very indecisive about what I wanted to eat but ended up getting nothing and started watching Orange Is The New Black on my tablet.
Got through 3 episodes by the time I got to LA 🙂

image

image

I got a Super shuttle from the LAX airport to my hostel in Hollywood. There was a guy in my shuttle called Kevin and he recognized me from staying at the hostel in SF. Turned out he was now going to the same hostel as me and he’s from NZ! Small world aye.
Tomorrow we’re both going to do the Warner Brothers Studio Tour so that should be interesting.

When I got to my hostel, I made my bed, Un packed some stuff and put my phone on charge. I’m staying at USA hostel in Hollywood and so far so good! I’m in a 6 bedroom female dorm room and we have our own bathroom attached which is good so you can leave your stuff in there and not have to carry shampoo and conditioner, your razor and soap down the hall with you just for a shower in the morning 😩

image

When I arrived there was a girl called Joanne who’s in the same room as me. We made friends quickly and decided to head to Mels Diner in Hollywood Boulevard for some late lunch.
I experienced a ‘real American diner experience’ but without the burger as I knew I’d never be able to finish it.
I did however order the nicest oreo shake I’ve probably ever had and an appetiser of chilli fries.
Which I also couldn’t finish 😣

image

image

image

Jo and I headed down hollywood boulevard after that and looked at some of the stars, went to the Chinese theatre and did a bit of window shopping. We’re so close to the Hollywood walk of fame (like it’s literally on the street next to us) that I saw all that pretty quickly.
I’m going to do some shopping tomorrow as I only had a quick look in Sephora and Victoria Secrets!
Not sure if I’ll buy much though, I might save that for New York City at the end of my contiki tour.

image

image

image

(Ew while writing this I can hear someone vomiting in the parking lot next to my room)
As we’re next to Hollywood boulevard there’s heaps of homeless people around and some of them seem to stay at this big parking lot right next door to the hostel.
My window faces the parking lot (I do however have a curtain and a wire window so they can’t see me) and we’re separated by a barbed wire fence. It just doesn’t block out the noise!

Anyways, I also visited a candy store in Hollywood and then we headed back to the hostel.

image

They even had a picture of Eminem MADE out of M&M’s haha

image

We chilled out the front for a bit (as the front of the hostel is all privately inclosed) and talked with 2 girls from the UK.
One of them, Helen ended up coming with us to Ghirardelli – finally I know!! And we had some drinks there. Like sugary drinks haha. They specialise in ice cream and chocolate but I wasn’t feeling one after my shake from the diner today so I ordered a raspberry smoothie and it was amazing!
I’m deff going back tomorrow though and getting a proper sundae. 🍨🍧

image

image

As we got back to the hostel, it was around 10pm so Jo and me headed upstairs to the lounge and watched a stand up comedy gig for a couple of hours. Helen had to pack her bags as her and her friend were leaving to do Trek America in the morning.

The comedy gig was put on by the hostel. Like they paid amateur stand up comedians to come in and do a few skits. Some were average but the last few were funny.

image

Now it’s 1.30am! I’ve had a shower and crawled in to bed. I spent ages in the shower scrubbing off my fake tan. It went all patchy so I had to scrub it off with a face cloth haha. That’s what happens when I don’t moisturise!
(I also can’t tan in the sun so I use artifical tanner instead, hence the shower mares)
I’m going to try and find a nice sugar scrub tomorrow when I go shopping.
Finally, I get a sleep in!!

Day 4 – San Francisco

My eyes are stinging from tiredness and I have 22 minutes to write this blog before I have to run to the laundry room and grab my clothes out of the drier before they shut the laundry room for the night!
😦😦

I was too busy talking to my mum on facebook messenger that I left my clothes sitting in the washing machine when they could have been drying 😐

Today was another busy fun filled day!
I’d organised with Kathy to meet her at her hotel in The Mission so we could spend the day together. As Ross had dentistry conference type stuff to attend we had a girls day.
I got up and had a hot shower (surprise) at the hostel. Washed my hair and got my make up on 😶 then headed off for my 20 minute walk to the Marriot where they were staying.
It’s funny I always think I’ve seen most of SF but then I come across more places I haven’t seen so I just have to take more photos like the tourist I am 😉

image

image

image

When I met up with Kathy in the lobby, we took a taxi to the Golden Gate Park where the gardens were. We came across this flower show when we got there so stopped and had a look at that. Well, it was basically flowers all set up that people had entered so they could win ‘most beautiful single flower’ or ‘most interesting flower’ etc etc…
They ended up being really pretty so I took a few pictures haha

image

image

After that, we headed into the botanical gardens and walked around for a few hours.

image

I even got to see a squirrel for the first time!! So cuteee.

image

Our feet were both really sore from the days we had yesterday so we sat in the ‘Asian gardens’ and talked for awhile. (And also took some schnaps)

image

image

image

The gardens are nice if you’re into that sort of thing. If I wasn’t with Kathy I don’t think I would have gone by myself. They did have really nice grassy areas you could defintaly have a picnic on though. It’d be nice to take your kids if you had them, or even if you just wanted a nice walk 🙂
When we’d finished at the gardens, we walked to the California Academy of Sciences.

image

It costs about $34 to get in but it honestly takes up like half your day. There’s so much to see!
There’s a big aquarium and stuff about earthquakes like back home. There’s also a rainforest/butterfly sanctuary you can go in and lots of stuff about animals in Africa etc…

image

image

image

We were pretty worn out from all our walking so we stopped at the food place they had at the museum and I got a really yummy falafel – even if I couldn’t finish the whole thing it was one of the best falafel I’ve had in terms of being true actual chickpeas haha.

image

When we’d finished, we headed back to Kathy’s hotel by taxi and met up with Ross. By this stage it was about 4.30pm.
We went up to their room and had a couple of drinks before heading up to the rooftop bar and having even more drinks!

image

image

As K & R are part of some club at the hotel, o got to enjoy a free dinner with them downstairs at the club room. Yum yum!! I’m enjoying all this free food and drinks they’re providing me with (well free for me anyways ;)) I don’t know how I’m going to cope when I’m in LA!

image

When we’d finished off our dinner, and I grabbed some cute little miniature lemon meringue pies and cookies for dessert (as you can see I have my appetite back), we headed upstairs again and talked about the different slang words us Kiwis use compared to the US Language.
Eg, bonnet – hood of a car
Brekkie  – breakfast
Bach – a small holiday home

No wonder they can’t understand what I’m talking about half the time 😄
To end our night we quickly went up to the rooftop again and I took some more pictures of the view of SF. On my phone they didn’t turn out that great but it’s what I could accomplish at the time…

image

image

When I’d finished seeing my final views, we headed downstairs and said our goodbyes!
They kindly put me in a taxi after my few cocktails and I headed back to my hostel.

image

image

I’m so happy I got the chance to meet such kind, beautiful people in the first week of my travels.
Like Ross said, it’s not the places you go, it’s the people you meet on the way that make your travels an experience.
If you guys are reading this, THANK YOU again! – for taking care of me so well. Not just seemingly paying for all my taxi fares but giving me great advice and great conversation.
The first few days I was an anxious nightmare, even though I like to think I’m really independent, the first few days just freaked me out. Even on the tour I met K&R on I wasn’t even going to do it because I had such bad anxiety.
But obviously now I’m glad I went.
I think SF is such a beautiful city!!
I really can’t wait to come back here, wherever that will be 😦

image

I’ve now currently moved myself from lying in my hot dorm room, to sitting on a chair outside the laundry room guarding my laundry while it still dries on its last few cycles.
The hostel managers haven’t come up to lock the laundry room yet so I’m squeezing in my last few minutes of dry time.
Speaking of things being hot, my legs feel very hot and I really hope I haven’t gotten them burnt in the sun today!! I already got sunburn on my shoulders yesterday 😐 I wasn’t going to buy any sunscreen until LA but thankfully Ross gave me some to tide me over. Haha!!

I’m up really early tomorrow! I have a flight to catch to LA so I’m hoping I don’t sleep in. Eek!

Thanks to everyone who’s told me they read my blogs. Makes me want to keep writing! :):):)
And I guess it’s good for me to have a journal of my journey

Day 3 – San Francisco

Today I nearly slept in as I accidentally set my alarm for Thursday instead of Friday (Today) 😯
My hair is in need of a wash but i only just washed it the other night so I tied it up today and had a quick shower then headed off to Alcatraz.
I did stop in the common room this morning to grab my 1/2 cup of Orange juice I seem to be having every morning haha. While I’m there I met an Auzzie guy for a brief moment that seemed cool but I was in a rush so had to leave before I could make another San Francisco friend.

I’m glad I booked my ticket to Alcatraz island a few months in advance! The lines were so long for people hoping to get a ticket. The Auzzie guy Matt told me later that he went to try and get one and found out people had been queuing from like 3am trying to get a spare ticket. So if you’re ever thinking of going to San Francisco and Alcatraz is on your bucket list – go here to book one in advance.

image

I arrived at the ferry terminal around 8am (after stopping off to get some water and strawberries for breakfast) and had to wait until nearly 9am to board the boat and head to the island.
When the ferry arrived at Alcatraz Island a park ranger (as Alcatraz is considered a national park) talked to us all at the beginning about where everything kinda was and some ‘rules’ about the park. To be honest, her talk went on for far too long that it actually got really boring so I walked off on my own and started the audio tour. This slightly worked in my favor as I was ahead of everyone else and didn’t have to wait for people to move in front of me to look at stuff.

image

image

image

Basically when you walk in, you’re given some headphones and a little audio player and you listen to the history of Alcatraz. They also had 4 inmate recordings in the audio piece talking about their time at the Prison which was interesting to hear from their perspective.
The first part I saw was the cells in B & C block. Each cell was about 5 feet by 9 feet (so not very big) all they had was a small sink with cold water, a bed and a toilet. The cells in D Block (segregation) were more spacious, but the inmates were in their cells 24 hours a day with only 1 day a week allowed for going out into the courtyard or something and even then they had to be alone. I think they were for the really bad people…

image

image

In the picture above, is the visiting area. Well, more like just a window to look at the person on the other side. Prisoners were allowed 1 visit per month but it had to be approved by the warden and they couldn’t have any physical contact with that person. They wernt even allowed to discuss prison life or any current events as it was monitored by a correctional officer the whole time.

image

The above picture is the library. The inmates weren’t allowed in there though, they just had a catalog of books to choose from that they could order from the Librarian.

image

image

As staff had to work on the island, their families lived on the island with them. A woman actually wrote a book about life growing up on Alcatraz that I saw in the gift store. At one time there was about 300 people living on Alcatraz island at one time, including wives and children.
There was a large duplex, and four large wooden houses for senior officers. I even heard they had their own bowling alley, dairy and soda fountain shop for the younger ones. They got most of their shopping from the mainland though and it was all ferried over.

image

What I found interesting is the 3 people that escaped from the prison.
Before them, there were people who tried to escape. One guy tried climbing the wire fence and was told to get down but didn’t so he got shot and fell into the shore and died.
Another few guys escaped out of D Block and tried to makeshift a raft together but were spotted.
The last 3 guys who were never found had chiseled away at the moisture-damaged concrete from around an air vent leading to a corridor, using tools such as a metal spoons soldered with silver from a dime and an electric drill improvised from a stolen vacuum cleaner motor. The noise was disguised by accordions, played during music hour (about 1 hour and a half), and their progress was concealed by false walls, which, in the dark recesses of the cells, fooled the guards.

The escape route then led up through an air vent, large enough for them to climb through. To trick the guards into thinking they were still in bed they made paper mâche heads in their cell (as shown in the above picture)
Pretty crazy! No one ever knows what happened to them. Most likely they drowned in the water trying to escape.

Anyways, I’ve talked so much about Alcatraz I’ve probably ruined it for anyone who actually wants to go.
The tour itself is around an hour i think.
I got back to the mainland about 11am so much earlier than I anticipated.

image

image

As I had time to spare, I decided to take another look around Fisherman’s bay and Pier 39. I went the night before with Kathy & Ross but I only did a bit of a browse with them and didn’t realize how big it was, even if it is full with tourists I still loved it 🙂

image

image

image

image

I went to this bath salt stand and got a plastic bottle to make my mum a little bath salt gift as she loves baths!
Now that I’ve made it, I should mail it home because it’ll get annoying in my bag. That’s the thing with travelling for 3 months, I feel I don’t want to buy too much because of having to carry it around 😯 Edit: I did end up carrying this around with me for my whole month in America and ended up sending it home when I was in NYC. It now sits in the bathroom a year later having not been used. Thanks Mum.

image

I also went to this candy store and got lots of different flavors! I was meant to share with Nathan when I got home but I’ve already had a few…
(By the way, I was on a lolly ban this year until I went on my trip so I’m officially allowed all the candy in the world!) 🍬🍭🍬🍭

image

I also tried a Corn Dog for the first time. I did think half way through eating it that I’m sure hot dogs aren’t meant to be a white colour but whatever….

image

Look at me taking all these selfies by my lonesome! Hahaha

image

Also saw the yummiest cupcakes! But I didn’t buy any 😩 Trying to save money and my figure haha.

image

I watched the sea lions on the pier which was quite funny to watch as they kept pushing each other off the dock.
By this stage it was about 2pm so I headed back to my hostel.
I love how SF is so easy to get around! Like once you know the main streets I swear you don’t even need a map anymore.
I did notice tonight before I went to bed I got sunburnt shoulders so I better buy some sunscreen ASAP 😦 I don’t want to be pink for my whole trip!

image

After chilling at my hostel for a bit, and nearly falling asleep, I went for another walk and went to a church which was really nice inside.

image

I feel I’ve been for like 5 different walks today, no wonder my feet and back are sore! 😥😥
I knew my hostel was throwing a free dinner tonight but I felt like Mexican food so I went in search of a place and ended up with this…

image

And this is the picture of my finished meal!!!
That’s how much I couldn’t eat it.
It was just way too much. It’s meant to be nachos, but it’s literally french fries covered with sour cream and salsa and guacamole, grilled chicken, jalapenos and cheese. While I was waiting for it to be made I was snacking on corn chips they give you when you order and a small Fanta (which was a large in NZ terms) so I was not at all hungry when it came to my main meal. 😧

I felt bad I couldn’t finish it all, I did want to but I also didn’t want to stretch my tummy!
When I got back to the hostel I sat with the Auzzie guy from this morning and the 3 Italian guys I met my first night I was here.
The Italians were going out tonight but I am so incredibly tired I’m in bed writing this blog instead.
3 of us did venture out before however and bought a tub of Ben’n’jerrys ice cream to share. NOW my tummy is officially stretched.
They’re leaving tomorrow though so it’s good I’m hanging out with Kathy!
She emailed me today and we’re going to go to the Golden Gate Park tomorrow  as well as the Botanical gardens, Museums and Union square (as I need to find a dress for Vegas)
It’s crazy how people come and go so quickly at the hostel but I guess that’s the joys of travelling.
Already, those Aussie girls in my dorm room have left from yesterday and now there’s 2 new Korean girls here. They’re nice 🙂 I showed them my video of the sea lions from today.
I don’t feel like such a Nana now as 4 out of 5 of us in the dorm room are in bed sleeping (well I will be soon)

Anyways, now that I have bought a SIM card and have unlimited data this blog should upload without any dramas!
