Day 34 New York! Feat. Philadelphia

Today was the final day of Contiki 😥
Everyone boarded the bus one last morning with all their bags and we all sung the morning song one last time.

image

The morning on the bus was spent sleeping for me.
We stopped in Philadelphia for a look around and some lunch just before 12pm.

image

A little Philadelphia information for you:
It’s the largest city in the U.S. state of Pennsylvania and the fifth-most-populous in the United States.
They have apparently like one and a half million people living there.

Philadelphia played a major role in the American Revolution as a meeting place for the Founding Fathers of the United States.

There’s a few ‘history’ type things to see there but we only really went and saw The Liberty Bell which is an icon symbol of American independence.

image

The bell was commissioned from the London firm of Lester and Pack (today the Whitechapel Bell Foundry) in 1752, and was cast with the lettering “Proclaim LIBERTY throughout all the land unto all the inhabitants thereof,” a Biblical reference from the Book of Leviticus

After seeing the bell, we went and got some street food. The others got one of the iconic Philly Cheese Steaks – a long roll with thin pieces of steak and melted cheese – but I ended up getting a falafel sandwich from a street cart. (Very vegetarian of me I know)
I’m a bit funny about eating meat in America let alone on the side of the road haha.

image

Once back on the bus (and me with my magnet I have to get in every state) we headed off to NYC.
I got a bit of shut eye on the bus then before I knew it we could see the New York City skyline. Eeek!

My phone was about to die so I had it on charge on the bus (so didn’t take any photos) not that they would have been very good coming from the bus window anyways.
However – to give you an idea, I’ve attached a picture above from Mr Google.

Anyone who knows me knows that New York City has been the one very place I’ve dreamed about visiting since I was young. I used to talk about going there “one day” for soo many years so this was such a big moment for me.

When our driver eventually maneuvered the coach to the hotel we were finishing at, we all unloaded our bags for the final time and started to say our goodbyes.
Reflecting back on the past month. I’ve had so much fun with this bunch of people on my Contiki! I thought our driver Ricky was fantastic. He always got us everywhere on time, if not earlier and obviously got us everywhere safely.
Our tour manager was awesome as well. Blake always went out of his way to make sure everyone was okay and knew info about all the places we went to so it wasn’t all just drinking at cool bars and getting drunk. We actually saw so many historic places.
I’ll probably write a different blog on my overall Contiki experience when I get home.
Edit: Check out my Contiki Vs. TopDeck Blog Here

Once I’d said my goodbyes, I got my bag on my back (I’ve been wheeling it around this whole time) and pondered about getting a Taxi or catching an Uber to my Hostel.
I decided I was gonna get the Subway instead to really do the whole New York experience.

image

And i’m glad I did!
The Subway was really easy to use when you have Google maps as it tells you exactly what station to get on at and where to walk.
I bought a unlimited metro card for the whole week and hopped onto the next train.
I was the only obvious tourist on the train with my big bag but no one really took any notice, there was a guy busking on the train though which was pretty cool.

image

I got off at 103 street and walked up the road to my hostel. Which was super easy to find! Signing in was quick and the reception people where pretty helpful.

image

The rooms here are pretty basic but they’re clean and tidy and you have your own locker.
I’m rooming with 3 other girls who I’ve barely talked to because they’re always out exploring.
(The people will probably change like 5 times this week though as new people come and go all the time)

It feels weird being by myself again and having to go up to people and talk to them compared to having instant friends on my Contiki.

When I eventually got settled in my room, I went in search of Central Park. I obviously didn’t read my Google maps very well and ended up at a park that I thought was the beginning of Central Park but was actually a park called Riverside Park. Ahh!
And here I was wondering why the Houston River was like right there in front of me.
Turns out I just looked at my map wrong and walked in the opposite direction.

image

There were so many people out for a run that I ended up running as well.
Can you see all the good-looking shirtless guys above? Hahaha.
I called my best friend Michelle on the way back to my hostel through Facebook Messenger. I didn’t really know my way back to the hostel but I just kept walking and figured it out in the end. (And got myself a fresh smoothie on the way)

image

On Monday Nights the hostel has a big band play live outside and free alcohol (which is beer and red wine – my 2 hated beverages haha)
It’s more of a night where you can meet all the new people and there’s a $7 BBQ which I ate.

image

I ended up sitting with a group of Aussies/British people and then heading out to a pub with lots of other people from the Hostel.
One of the guys from Australia pre-drunk a little bit with me before we left and then we all took the subway to this bar called Jacks Dilemma.

image

Jacks Dilemma turned into Sarah ‘s Dilemma when she was bought too many drinks and shots from Auzzie, NZ and British. Auzzie ended up having to take me home (no idea what time, but it was after we lost at beer pong) and I had far too many shots.
I’m gutted my first experience in a NYC cab was the driver pulling over so I could spew on the road haha.
(Again, sorry mother)

On a nicer note, I woke up this morning feeling alllll good!
Xx

Day 8 -Los Angeles (Contiki)

This is the first night I’m sleeping in a nice proper double bed with crisp white sheets tucked in nice and tight, a duvet and four pillows.
I’m sleeping on make-up free pillowcases and I don’t feel I have to use my own pillowcase I brought from home.
If you hadn’t guessed it, I’m staying at a hotel!

Oooh la la I hear you say?
Have I given up on my hostel stays?
Unfortunately not.
I’m starting my Contiki tomorrow morning nice and early so I’m staying at the Miyako Hotel in Downtown LA which is where the Contiki begins.

I’ll write about my day first of all before I go on about the Contiki.

This morning I woke up nice and early at the USA hostel in Hollywood.
I’d pretty much packed my bag last night so I just had a shower, did my make-up and got the last of my belongings from my dorm room quietly as two of the Aussie girls were sleeping.

I checked out of the hostel and left my bags in the storage room that the hostel let’s you use.

This morning, myself and two of my new Aussie friends – Shay and Jarid – went to a Dr Phil taping.
Hahahahaha. I can hear everyone’s laughter from here.
They were already planning to go and as I’m a Dr Phil fan anyways I accompanied them.
I’ve been known to watch a bit of Dr Phil on the TV’s at work in my lunch break so this was an exciting trip for me!

Once we were all ready, off we went on the bus to the Paramount Studios in Los Angeles where they film Dr Phil.

image

As we lined up around 9am, we ended up having to be put in the 2nd show at 10.45am. 😕 as the first taping had become full.
It was a bit annoying having to wait around for nearly another two hours but we just went down to the Diner on the corner and had a really early lunch/late breakfast.
The Diner at first glance looked really average but was surprisingly good.
I ordered a Vanilla shake and a grilled cheese sandwich. Very American of me I know. I’m loving these shakes over here! They’re so thick 🍵

image

image

However I can’t quite get over how they use cheddar cheese in like everything here and it’s so yellow!

After we had finished eating it was pretty much time to head back to the studios so we walked back and lined up again.
Once we were selected to go through we ended up having to wait in the sun for like an hour on these seats until the previous group came out from the first episode of filming.
They take your phone’s off you too so we actually had to be social with one another 😄 and not just flick through Instagram and Facebook.

When we finally got through, we were put near the back as Shay and Jarid were wearing jeans and as that’s not very formal we had to kind of be ‘hidden’.
So I recommend if you ever go – wear something nice!
A nice skirt and top with heels, a suit even or a nice pair of pants and dressy top will get you put up the front.
We could still see really well though so I wasn’t complaining.

The show today was about a man called Richard Glossip who’s in jail and is about to be executed as he’s on death row.Susan-Sarandon-responds-to-Piers-Morgan-criticizing-cleavageThey also had the Hollywood actress Susan Sarandon on the show to appeal to the U.S. public to help try to stop the execution of Glossip as she believes he is innocent.
Richard Glossip who is 52, is due to die by lethal injection next month but has always maintained he is not guilty of murder.
He was sentenced to death for his part in the killing of motel owner Barry Alan Van Treese in January 1997.
img-Oklahoma-s-next-to-die-afraid-of-prolonged-painful-deathSarandon said on the show that the scheduled execution in Oklahoma shows everything that is wrong with the death penalty in America.
The fact he was convicted on the testimony of another guy Justin Sneed, who confessed to beating Treese to death with a baseball bat, but said he had been hired to do it by Glossip

She was also saying how people who do much worse get off the death penalty and he wasn’t given a fair trial as in America sometimes having money is all you need to get off lots of things.
I think it airs a few days before September the 16th so you’ll have to watch out for it! (You may even see me in the audience if you’re lucky ;))

Unfortunately I don’t have any pictures of the show as we weren’t allowed to bring cameras or phones in.
I saw Dr Phil’s wife though as she was sitting a few rows down from us. She looks pretty much exactly as she does on TV. Very well-presented and quite ‘perfect’.

When the taping was done (which ran over an hour more than it was meant to) we headed back to Hollywood boulevard and quickly went to Walgreen’s so I could buy some snacks for my Bus Tour tomorrow.

image

Then we went shopping at Forever 21.
Jarid ended up leaving us girls to our own devices and we had a nice shop together, even though I spent the whole time rushing trying to find a dress and heels for Vegas before I had to head to my hotel that night.

I did find a dress from one of the stores on Hollywood Boulevard (it’s pretty but it’s nothing amazing) so I bought it just in case I couldn’t find anything else.
I have yet to get heels though so I’ll have to wait until I go to Vegas tomorrow and try and fit some shopping in!

imageIt was getting a bit late and I needed to get to my next Hotel so Shay and I went back to the Hostel so I could grab my bags. I said my goodbyes to Shay, Jarid and Kevin before I Uber-ed my way to Miyako Hotel.
My Uber girl who picked my up was really nice and we talked the whole way about my trip around the world and her living in LA.
It only cost me $9 for a 23 minute ride to the hotel too. Bargain!! I love uber.

image

When I checked in at my hotel, I went to my room and met my room mate for the night, Lauren. (When you start your Contiki and stay at the Pre-Contiki Hotel, they pair you up with someone on the same Contiki to make the room cheaper for you)
I think every night on the trip you get a different person so it’ll be good to meet lots of new people 🙂
Edit: You get put with a room-buddy for your whole trip and they stay the same, however it’s not the person you’re roomed with on your first pre-contiki night.

At 7pm we all met upstairs in a meeting room (it wasn’t compulsory so only about 20 of us were there)
We talked about any questions we had about the Contiki, where the nearest food places were and filled out some emergency details they needed from us.
Once we were done a few of us headed down the road to eat dinner.
I got frozen yogurt instead of an actual dinner and now I’m starving!!! 😥
That’s what happens when I snack 😐 I don’t feel like a full meal and then later on I get so hungry.

When everyone had gotten something to eat, five of us headed down to a brewery and had some drinks.
Well the boys drunk beer and I just sat and chatted as I always do as I hate beer and they had no other drinks on offer.
I’ve made 4 friends so far + my room mate Lauren so it looks like everyone is going to be pretty friendly.

image

The picture above has a little story to it – as we all sat down at a table in the brewery, I realized someone had left all these stickers on it.
Without any of the boys knowing I successfully put a sticker on each of their backs. Then I got them to play a game with these little bean bags the pub provided, then made the boys all line up to play just so I could take a photo of them with these silly stickers. I couldn’t stop laughing!
They had no idea what I was giggling about the whole time until I eventually told them.
They said they’re going to get me back though so I better watch my back haha.

We headed back to the hotel at around 11.30pm and I packed my bag again and had a shower.
Look how weird our toilet is in the picture below. It has a seat warmer and all these buttons which I have no idea what they do. I was too scared to push any of them to find out.

Now I’m off to sleep!!
It’s nearly 12.30am 😯😯
Have to be ready by 7.15am tomorrow to get all my stuff to the bus, eek!!

Day 7 – Los Angeles

Tonight is my last night in my hostel before I stay at a Hotel tomorrow night getting ready to start my contiki!

I woke up this morning bright and early and joined in on breakfast for the very first time. There was unfortunately no bagels but they did have a selection of porridge and do-it-yourself pancakes.
I made some chocolate chip ones with banana on top but when I sat down with them I could only have a few bites before I felt sick.
Breakfast isn’t really my thing…

I’d signed up to take the free shuttle at 10am to Santa Monica beach this morning from the hostel but as I was one of the last people who put their name down I missed out 😥 and was put on the ‘wait list’ for the shuttle that left at 12pm!
The 4 people I was going with had to leave me behind so I Ubered with 2 other guys instead who were in the same situation as me.
It was like an hours drive away but only cost us like $12 each which was alright.

We ended up being dropped off at Venice Beach which is like half an hour walk away from Santa Monica but my friends were walking to Venice anyways so it all worked out.
One of the guys in the Uber ended up sticking with me while I waited for my friends and for the rest of the day.
We lost him when we were about to leave and now that I think of it… I haven’t seen him since.
His English really isn’t that good so I hope he got back to the hostel all good 😯

When I met up with everyone we went and got some lunch.

image

I got a basic hamburger and fries. And yes, I didn’t finish this meal either.

image

I must say, the bread tastes a bit different over here. Like, not as fresh…

When we’d finished eating we walked to the skate park and watched some locals skate.

image

Then it was off to Muscle beach where all the famous body builders apparantly work out. Or have done so in the past.
We of course had to take some muscle photos.

image

image

We decided to find a nice spot on the beach of Venice and get our tan on. Or in my case, my burn on. 😈

image

This is me pre-burn, look how happy I was.

image

The backs of my legs got burnt as that’s where I didn’t put any sun screen on. I’m such a picky bitch with my sunscreen. I hate the lotions and I’ll only really use the spray. Plus the only spray I like is nutrogena but I didn’t have any with me so had to use cream 😣
It makes the sand stick and I hate it!!! 😝

image

I got to try out my new bikini I got from Victoria Secrets though!

image

So brown! Yet, so not-real.

When we finished having a snooze on our towels on the beach, we set off for the walk down to Santa Monica Pier. And my golly, was it a walk and a half!! Ecspecially in jandals. My feet officially hate me.

image

The 2 aussies also got into an argument with a stall owner as they were going to buy 2 tops off them as she told them “buy 1 get 1 free for $8.99″ and when they went to pay she said it was $20 and insisted she said $18.99 not $8.99
Such a load of crap!! Ecspecially as they were the type of tops you buy in SE Asia and they shrink in the wash so that was such a rip off.
The aussie’s were like “what!! We asked you and you said $8.99″ and then she acussed them of stealing coat hangers off her when they were trying on the tops as she was missing them.
They ended up being like fuck it and walking off without buying the tops that she had SUCH a physco and screamed at them to “fuck off and never come back to my store again! You wasted my time!!!!”

When we finally got to santa monica we checked out the pier and then caught the bus home. (I only have pictures on my actual camera as my phone died)

We had to take 2 buses home and the total ride time was over an hour but it was only $2 so I didn’t care 😦

I was so knackered when I got back. I felt like crap with sand stuck to me in all places, my hair smelling like the sea and old sunblock stuck on my arms and back. I had a shower and then headed off by myself and got some enchiladas for dinner.

image

Now I’m ready for sleep!!!
Got to get up early again tomorrow morning 😴😴
