Day 74 – Dubai

Saturday 24th October

My sightseeing bus pass was still valid for today so I decided to do a different route and see where it took me.

image

First off I went to the Mall next to my hotel to get some breakfast. I don’t think I’ll ever pay for breakfast again if I go travelling haha, I never seem to wake up in time to have it when I’m staying at hotels or hostels.
My alarm goes off at like 9am and I’m so tired I end up just going back to sleep. I think I’m still on European time.

So I missed the hotel breakfast and tried to find something at the mall. By this time it was like 12pm so I guess it was more like lunch. I wasn’t feeling like a big meal and I was on a budget so I got a cinnamon scroll! Hahaha. Probably not the best thing to start off my day.

image

It was pretty yum though. Even if it was a bit too sugary for my liking. I can’t wait when I go home to have healthier food, even some avocado on toast with some pepper would be nice for breakfast haha. 🍞🍅

image

If anyone ever ends up going to Dubai, at The Mall Of The Emirates there’s something called Ski Dubai. Which is basically a large indoor ski field. I never did it because I’ve done something similar before at Snow Planet In Auckland (and I’m not the best skier) but it’s looks like something fun to do in Dubai.

image

When I’d finished my ‘breakfast’ I went and waited for the next Sightseeing Tour Bus and hopped on to the one that would take me to The Mall Of Dubai. I had to switch buses there to get onto the Red route and had to wait about 10 minutes.
While I was waiting though, this little baby kitten jumped out of the bushes and it just made me so sad!
He was not a healthy kitten at all. He was so skinny and had yucky eyes but was so playful. He kept playing with the leaves and when me and this other girl started petting him he kept jumping up on us so we could hold him.

image

Me and this other girl were worried how skinny he was, Ecspecially as he looked so young too!
We asked one of the bus tour people if there was an animal doctor around and they said no and not to worry about it. 😒
When our bus arrived the kitten kept following us and I had to walk away because there was nothing I could do. If I lived in Dubai it’d be such a different story. I’d take him to the vet and everything. The poor baby 😥 I seriously contemplated taking him back home with me but knew he’d be too sick to be allowed back. Awwwwww. When we were about to pull away I saw him run under one of the buses so quickly knocked on the window to get one of the guides attention and motioned to him that the kitten was playing underneath the bus.
When we drove past I saw a couple of the guys on their hands and knees looking under the bus so I really hope they got him. It just wasn’t safe for him to be around all those buses and vans! 😯😯

image

Anyways, onto something a bit happier.
The red route took me past Down Town Boulevard which is where the Burj Khalifia, the Dubai Mall and the Dubai Fountain are all located. Apparently the whole area is 2 square kilometers so it’s pretty big.

image

The Burj Khalifa

image

We also drove past the World Trade Centre which is along Sheik Zayed Road. It’s 39 stories and stands at 149 meters tall. Most of the floors are let out commercially and it used to be the tallest building in Dubai until they built the Burj Khalifia. Companies like Johnson & Johnson, Mastercard and Sony are all in that building, it’s also featured on the 100 Dirham Bank note.

imageimage

I got off at the next stop which was the Dubai Museum.
It was a pretty hot day (as usual In Dubai) and when I entered it seemed like it was all out doors and under sheltered areas. I didn’t think I was going to stick around very long because of the humidity until I saw an entrance that took you downstairs to learn about more of the history of Dubai, and it was air conditioned! 😥😥

image

All the information set out was quite interesting. I read about how Dubai was sustained by fishing and pearl diving for a thousand years until the great depression hit which caused a collapse in the international pearl market.
It wasn’t until 1966 that Dubai discovered oil which has pretty much made  Dubai the modern, business centered city it is today.
Dubai is also considered to be the ‘Hong Kong’ of The Middle East. I read that when the world’s oil supply runs out Dubai would happily survive as it was a major trading center before oil even existed. Lucky them!

imageimage

There was a part of the museum which spoke about food in Dubai from way back in the day until now. The Food in Dubai is very similar to that of India I’ve seen. It has lots of spices and most dishes contain rice, fish and meat because it’s so close to the sea it’s easier to get fresh fish that way. I also learnt that Camels milk is really good for kids as it’s high in calcium and fat. Not sure if I’d ever try that 😐 The meat is usually mutton from either sheep and goats as that’s what Bedouin kept.

image

The Bedouin people are something to know about Dubai. They’re the people who inhabit the desert. It’d be so difficult to live in the desert but they’ve made it a way of life by adapting to everything and doing things a certain way. When you’re in Dubai you can also book an overnight stay at a Bedouin camp to experience a bit of how they live.

Back in the day, the Bedouin men would collect firewood and grass for the animals and then they would then sell this and any money they would get would go towards food that they couldn’t get from their animals. (like bread and rice)
The woman would take care of the house and the children and be in charge of collecting the water. They also drunk the camels milk which I mentioned before and made yoghurt out of it which the kids would help with.
The families would usually stay in one place for 5 months and then move on to somewhere else like near the water so it was easier to collect something to drink in the Summer Time.

image

Only few Bedouins live like they used to in their goat haired tents, raising livestock and hunting. Their numbers are decreasing and nowadays there are approx. only 5% of Bedouins still living as pastoral nomads in all of the Middle East.

You can tell if someone is a Bedouin as they have different facial features by which they can be distinguished from other Egyptians and also they generally dress differently.
The Bedouin men wear long ‘djellabaya’ and a ‘smagg’ (red white draped headcover) or ‘aymemma’ (white headcover) or a white small headdress, sometimes held in place by an ‘agall’ (a black cord).

image

I spent about just over an hour at the museum and then headed on my way to the bus. Luckily when I left I saw my bus company was there so I ran for it and made it on 🙂 no waiting in the sun for me!

The bus took us to some more stops but I didn’t really get off. I was trying to time my day well so I could be back at my hotel by about 5pm. I was wanting to have a shower and then get ready to head out to a bar or something to watch the All Blacks play South Africa in the Rugby World Cup Semi Finals.

We drove past a few Souks and as it was around 3.30pm I got off at a different shopping centre to have a look around and grab some lunch.

image

I walked around Sephora for a little bit and contemplated buying some new mascara but they didn’t have the one I wanted in stock.
I ended up buying another pair of gym pants from some sporting store. The retail assistant was actually so annoying I don’t even know why I bought them off her.
You find over here that in some stores (Victoria Secrets is so painful for this) the sales assistants follow you around like you’re about to run off with half of their merchandise.

As soon as you walk in the store it’s “hello how are you madam? Can I help you look for something?” And I’m always just having a browse so I tell them that but they continue to follow me everywhere that it actually make me uncomfortable. If I so much as touch a pair of pants they’re by my side “what size?? What size you look for madam???? We have your size I get it for you”
I’m usually just feeling the material or something as that’s what girls do. I try not to hover near an item for longer than 4 seconds otherwise it’s off the rack and in the changing room ready for me to try on.

I love Victoria Secrets but every store I’ve been to on this trip, the girls in there are so helpful that it’s starting to do my head in a bit.
Every single one of them greets you and asks if they can help you at some stage. They all want to measure your boobs because even if you know your size “their sizing may be different”
The ask for your name I’m assuming to make it more like they know you and ‘we’re friends’
But the way they write their name on a piece of paper for you and give it to you “incase you need help with anything” shows they must get some type of Commission for the items they sell you and don’t care if the pants your trying on makes you look fat.
Don’t get me wrong, some girls are absolutely fine but I had this one lady today who just threw half the pants I glanced at on the rack into my basket for me to try on. One girl had already helped me and suggested I get a grey pair of pants and I said I didn’t like them and proceeded to look at something else, next thing you know the loud sales assistant is coming over “OMG those are so amazing the ones you’re looking at, I have them at home and they’ve only JUST come out. Have you seen the grey!!??”
Me “oh yes I did, they’re not really my thing though”
VS lady “oh but they’re soooo much nicer on!! Here I’ll put them in your basket for you, oh you MUST get a bra as well. We’re having such a great sale today”

Next thing I know I have 5 bras I didn’t want, 3 tops and 2 pairs of leggings to try on.
Lunch was going to have to wait. 😧
I ended up grabbing some fries from New York Fries later on as the pictures made them look yum, they were pretty average to be honest.

image

I mucked around too long that I got stuck in traffic on the way back to The Dubai Mall.
I then had to either choose to get get a taxi back to my hotel or take the Metro. By this stage is was nearly 6pm and kick off started at 7pm (or 6pm and I’m getting my times confused)

image

To make a long story short, I got back to my hotel just after kick off so I didn’t get a chance to head to a bar or anything to be social with other kiwis. I sat on my bed in my hotel and watched a very intense game while really needing to shower from my sweaty day. Thankfully we won so we’re in the finals for the Rugby world cup 2015 against Australia.

I did finish off my night with this lovely dessert though.

Day 70 – Rome

Tuesday 20th October 2015

Woops. I slept in again this morning.

I eventually left my hostel room at about 11am and met up with Malerie  (the Californian girl from the previous night) to do some sight seeing.

image

As she’d already been to Rome before, she became my tour guide and took me to all the main sights.
The first stop was the Ruins and the Collesseum!

image

We didn’t actually go into the Colosseum (trying to save my money for Dubai) but we took some pictures outside it and sat for a bit.
I was silly and wore my new converse sneakers which are like half a size too small for me. My poor baby toes were squished for the whole entire day of walking!
Thankfully Malorie was a touch hungover/tired so was happy to rest every few stops.

image

As I hadn’t had anything for breakfast and it was lunch time, we stopped at one of the First Italian restaurants we saw and sat outside.
I’m so glad this is the one we came across because I then proceeded to drink the best hot chocolate I have ever experienced in my life.

image

It was basically pure chocolate with a generous helping of whipped cream on top. It was a meal in itself, so so so good!!!
The lasagna was just as amazing too. If this was how Rome ate, I was ready to move here in a second! 😍

image

When I was full of all my Italian goodness, we set out for more of our walk. We went to The Altare della Patria which is a monument built in honor of Victor Emmanuel, the first king of a unified Italy.

imageimage

The monument also holds the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier with an eternal flame. It was built under the statue of goddess Roma after World War I.

imageimage

After walking up the stairs to the Tomb, we went to the museum of Italian Unification. We then took like 100 more stairs to the top of the museum which had a beautiful view over part of Rome.

If my eyes look squinty it was because the sun was in them haha!

imageimageimageimage

There is also an elevator which allows visitors to ride up to the roof for a 360 degree view of Rome but again, we didn’t want to pay for the view when we already had a pretty great one!

When we’d taken like 500 pictures, we set off walking again and came across this really beautiful cathedral. Probably the nicest one I’ve seen so far on my travels. It was so huge! If I was to ever get married, I never really wanted to in a church but this one I would make an exception for.

imageimageimageOur next stop was probably another one of my favorites. Piazza Navona.
It’s a town square which was built in 1st century AD where The Ancient Romans went to watch the Agones (games) hence it was known as the “Circus Agonalis” (competition arena).

Nowadays it’s surrounded my restaurants and filled with locals selling all their artwork. I’m not one of those people who can spend hours at galleries but all these portraits and paintings were amazing! I ended up buying one painting for my wall (a small one) but if I had room in my bag I’d have loved to buy more!

imageimageimageimageimage

Malerie really wanted to go to The Pantheon afterwards so we walked there and I attempted to take pictures but as the sun was behind me they ended up coming out really dark.
The Pantheon is actually one of the best-preserved of all Ancient Roman buildings. It’s been in continuous use throughout its history, and since the 7th century, the Pantheon has been used as a church.

imageimageimageimage

My feet were killing me by this stage but we soldiered on and went in search of some Gelato for me.
Malorie had already had some at the Piazza but I wanted a better one than the place she got hers from 😌 fussy I know! They just didn’t have enough flavors for me to choose from.

image

We stopped at the Trevi Fountain on the way but it’s under construction until next year so there wasn’t much picture taking there.

I found my Gelato in the end (but didn’t take a picture) and it was sooo good! The third amazing thing I’d eaten that day haha.
We sat down and rested our feet while I had my Gelato and talked for a bit.
Malerie mentioned going to the Spanish Steps so I Googled mapped it and I thought we were heading in the right direction until 20 minutes later I realized we weren’t haha. 🙈🙈

image

We headed back to our hostels after my awful mapping skills as we were in desperate need of a drink!
First we grabbed some pizza for dinner then headed to the Yellow Hostel Bar for some cider and wine.
What a day of walking! I’m glad I had Malerie there to show me lots of stuff and keep me company while I explored Rome. I defintaly wouldn’t have seen as much as I did if she wasn’t with me!

These babe’s are in desperate need of a pedicure now!

Day 43 – London

I don’t think I’ve been disappointed in any city I’ve been to so far.
Even if some places are a little bit mediocre I can still see the beauty or difference in it which is always a good thing. 😍

London is beautiful!
It may be alot colder than America and the sky is more cloudy but it has so many beautiful old buildings and things to check out.
The taxis are all black and everyone is in a rush. I find the tube more confusing than New York but I’m getting there 🙂 Ecspecially now that I have a SIM card so I can use that cheeky Google maps.

My first day was spent sleeping until 1pm. I didn’t get to sleep properly until about 5am so I had to have some shut eye!
I messaged a guy who was staying at the same hostel, Sean and asked if he wanted to do a bit of sightseeing. I met him the night before and he was one of the few people who hadn’t seen much of London. Even though he was born here!
So after getting ready, I met Sean down stairs and we headed off over the Tower Bridge.
I didn’t even know it was Blue!

image

image

We were both pretty hungry/hungover so went in search of some food.
You’d think there’d be food places everywhere but we were struggling to find something we both felt like.
We eventually decided on getting some smoothies and then went to find some Mexican Food.

imageimageWalking with our yummy Smoothies, we found a place called Benito’s Hat and decided to have some lunch there. We both ordered Burritos with some Chipotle grilled Chicken and recieved a small side of Corn Chips, which we ate by the womdpw people watching 🙂
Finally with some food in our tummies, we headed off and caught the underground tube to Westminster Abbey. We basically just looked on a map and picked somewhere touristy to go to. Big Ben was also nearby so it was good to tick two things off our list.

imageWhen we exited the tube and walked up the stairs to the sidewalk, Big Ben was literally right there in front of my eyes. They’re not joking when they call him Big either!
I only got a quick snap on my phone because we planned to come back later and take some better pictures. (which didn’t end up happening of course)
However Big old Ben will still be there when I come back from my Top Deck tour so I’m not too worried about missing out.

imageimageBy this stage of our adventure around London, I was freezing!
I stupidly thought I’d get too hot from walking so decided not to bring a jacket or jumper or anything!
We had to Google map some shops so i could go and buy myself one.

image

On the way to the shopping streets we walked past Buckingham Palace so had to stop and take pictures!
The Queen was most likely out getting some groceries from Sainsbury so we decided not to go in for scones and tea.

image

imageimage

I did consider buying some tea towels for my mum from the Buckingham Palace gift shop nearby until I saw how expensive they were!
I generally don’t think the UK is a very expensive place, but with our New Zealand exchange rate I’m dying even more than I was while in America. I think a tea towel ended up being about NZD$15 😧😧
So, sorry to my Mum back home, I didn’t get it for you.

I did however buy myself a Harvard University hoodie from a British gift store for £20 (which is probably over $40 back home just for a generic Hoodie) now I feel like I can’t ever throw it out.
Continuing our walk through London, we came across a park and I took some snaps of the squirrels and the cute ducks! (we don’t have Squirrels back home so I always find them adorable)
We also saw the London Eye but didn’t make it up there as we didn’t quite have enough time. Just another thing to add to my ‘list of things to do in London’ when I get back.

imageimageimage
imageWe came across a Boots store (which I now realise are everywhere around London) and I bought some Shampoo and Conditioner as I was running low. I also had a look at all the make-up and skin care they had while Sean hung around – probably bored out of his mind.
When we got back to the Hostel, it was 9pm! I didn’t even realize it was that late as we’d been walking around for ages. I must still be on New York City time.
Sean and I agreed to go and grab some dinner after we’d freshened up a bit so met down in the Hostel Lobby half an hour later.
We decided to sit down and have some Indian food at a restaurant really close to the hostel before heading back to the hostel bar afterwards for another couple of bevvys.

image(That’s my picture of the dinner I had but finished and forgot to take a snap of 😑)

I’m rushing the end of this blog because it’s 11pm here and I still have today to write about! Plus I have to get up super early to sign in for my Top deck tour tomorrow morning.

My next blog will be about what I got up to today 🙂
